SUBJECT: CRITICAL CARE NURSING TOPIC: POISONING AND DRUG OVERDOSE

Group members

O bjectives At the end of this presentation the learners will be able to : Define poisoning and drug overdose. Identify the signs and symptoms of poisoning and drug overdose. Describe the initial management and interventions. Recognize common pharmacological treatments and antidotes. Discuss appropriate nursing care for patients with poisoning and drug overdose.

Poison A poison is any substance that is harmful to the body when ingested, breathed, injected or absorbed through the skin. Drug overdose Drug overdose is the intake of a drug in amounts much higher than recommended, with in a short time period. An overdose can lead to serious medical complications including death. The severity of a drug overdose depends on the drug, the amount taken, and the physical and medical history of the person who overdosed.

POISONING Poisoning occurs when a person is exposed to a substance that can cause harm. Common sources of poisoning include: Household chemical Venomous bites Contaminated food Pesticides The severity of poisoning can vary depending on the type and amount of substance ingested.

Sign and symptom The sign and symptom of drug overdose can vary widely depending on the type of drug involved, but most common symptom are; Confusion or disorientation Difficulty in breathing Slurred speech Hallucination Nausea and vomiting Irregular heart beat Blue or pale skin

Laboratory examination Arterial blood gases Plasma electrolytes Laboratory test for renal function Laboratory test for hepatic function ECG Endoscopic examination X ray

Anti-dote Anti-dote is a substance that counteracts or neutralizes the harmful effects of a poison or toxin. Antidotes work through various mechanisms depending on the toxin. They may bind directly to the toxin to neutralize its effects, block its interaction with cellular receptors, or enhance the body's ability to eliminate the toxin.

Activated charcoal Activated charcoal is called a universal antidote due to its ability to adsorb a wide variety of toxins and chemicals in the gastrointestinal tract . By binding to these substances activated charcoal can prevent their absorption into the blood stream, there by reducing their systemic effect .

Management The initial management of poisoning and drug overdose involves stabilizing the patients condition and preventing further absorption of the toxic substance. Supportive care (airway maintanence and monitoring vital signs) Enhancement of poison elimination Administration of anti-dotes Prevention of re-exposure

Measures to prevent poison ingestion Always put medicines away after use and not leave on tables. Never take or administer medicines in the dark. Stores all poisons in lock containers. Store all medicines out of children's reach. Never allow kids to take medicines without supervision. Do not keep poisonous plants in the house. Keep medicines in original containers.

Decontamination Decontamination methods include gastric lavage, activated charcoal administration, and skin decontamination. The decision to decontaminate should be based on the substance ingested, the time of ingestion, and also depends on the patients condition. Nurses should follow established Protocols for decontamination procedures .

Monitoring and follow-up Continuous monitoring of the patients vital signs, Neurological status, and laboratory values is crucial in managing poisoning and drug overdose. Patient should be closely observed for potential complications and changes in their condition. Provide education To the patients and families on preventing further episodes of poisoning .

Conclusion Poisoning and drug overdose are critical emergencies that require prompt assessment and intervention by nurses. Nursing student must be equipped with the knowledge and skills to recognize , manage, and educate patients about poisoning and drug overdose. Continuous education and training can enhance nursing proficiency in handling cases of poisoning and drug overdose .
