ASCON SPONGE-LEUCOSOLENIA Phylum:Porifera Class : Calcarea Order : Homocoela INTRODUCTION 1.It is simple type of sponge called asconoid sponge. 2.Its body is perforated by numerous pores. Hence included in the phylum Porifera .
HABIT AND HABITAT It is marine colonial sponge attached to rocks. It is found in sea-shore areas where the tidal action is heavy.
STRUCTURE 1.It is a branched colony. 2.It consists of horizontal tubes and vertical tubes. 3.The horizontal tubes are branched and they have adhesive discs that helps to attach to the substratum. 4.The vertical tubes are unbranched.It is 2.5cm in height.
4. The surface of the body contains numerous minute openings called ostia . 5. The ostia open into a large cavity called spongocoel located inside the body. 6. The spongocoel opens to the outside by csculum situated at the free end of the body. BODY WALL The body wall is diploblastic . It is formed of an outer ectoderm and inner choanoderm . There is a gelatinous substances lying in between them, called mesenchyme .
Reproduction It occurs in asexual and sexual methods. ASEXUAL REPRODUCTION 1.It takes place by budding. 2.A bud developed from the base of the individual as an outgrowth. 3. It grows in length and develops an osculum at the free end.
SEXUAL REPRODUCTION 1.It is hermaphrodite. 2.Gonads are not formed. Gametes are produced by the archaeocytes . 3.Sperms and ova are released into the water.
