pH In chemistry , pH also referred to as acidity or basicity , historically denotes " potential of hydrogen " (or "power of hydrogen"). It is a logarithmic scale used to specify the acidity or basicity of aqueous solutions . A solution with a higher concentration of hydrogen ions than pure water is an acid, while a solution with a lower concentration is a base. The pH scale is logarithmic and inversely indicates the activity of hydrogen ions in the solution. pH is measured on a scale of 0 to 14. On this scale, a pH value of 7 is neutral, which means it is neither acidic nor basic. A pH value of less than 7 means it is more acidic, and a pH value of more than 7 means it is more basic.
