WHAT IS SOIL? Soil is made up of smallest particles of rocks, which contains decayed matter of plants and animals. Humus comes from decaying plants and animals. Different types of soil have different physical characteristics. Each soil type differs in color, texture, odor and its ability to hold water. Some soils are good for planting while others are not. The presence of the different kinds of vegetative plants in a place is an evidence of a good quality of soil in the area or locality.
TYPES OF SOIL LOAM CLAY SAND
Loam Soil Loam is a mixture of sand and clay. It has fine texture. It contains nutrients for plants to grow strong. Loam soil allows water to drain evenly.
Clay Soil Clay particles are The finest of all the soil particles. Particles stick Together and form A sticky or Gluey texture when Wet or dry.
Sand Soil Sand consists of Particles of weathered Rock. It is the most Extensively used Construction material. It does not hold water Well because the particles are coarse and loose.
Loam
both of them are made of inorganic particles, derived from weathered rock and volcanic material. T he particles are packed together tightly. I t is sticky when wet H as the finest texture I t holds much water They are both tiny little rocks. Sand soil has the size of grains while clay is the tiniest. It is a mixture of sand and clay I t has a fine texture I t can hold enough amount of water C ontains large amounts of decaying plants and animals and organisns which make it best for planting and growing crops. They are made up of organic particles, usually derived from weathered rock or air fall volcanic material, and include organic matter from decayed plant and maybe animal material. It does not hold water well because the particles are coarse and loose Directions: Using the Venn Diagram, compare and contrast the different kinds of soils. Descriptions are provided in the table below. The given description must be placed accordingly ensuring that such is compared and contrasted correctly.
Directions: Determine whether the following descriptions are characteristics of different types of soil. Choose your answer on the box provided below. Write your answer on the space provided before each number. ________1. It is sticky when wet and has the finest texture. ________2. It has fine texture. ________3. It can be used for planting. ________4. Its particles are coarse and loose. ________5. It becomes hard when dry. Loam Sand Clay ACTIVITY #1: “Give Me My Name”
ACTIVITY #2: “What I am?” Directions: Demonstrate the different types of soil. Copy and record all your observations in your Science notebook. compare each type of soil and answer the guide questions as follows: Questions: 1. Based on the activity, what are the characteristics of the different types of soil? 2. How they differ to each other?
