O. HENRY O. HENRY

Early Life Born William Sydney Porter, on September 11, 1862, in Greensboro, North Carolina. The American short-story writer pioneered in picturing the lives of lower-class and middle-class New Yorkers. Porter attended school for a short time, then clerked in an uncle's drugstore. At the age of 20, Porter went to Texas, working first on a ranch and later as a bank teller. In 1887, he married Athol Estes and began to write freelance sketches. A few years later he founded a humorous weekly,  The Rolling Stone . When the publication failed, he became a reporter and columnist on the  Houston Post .

William Sydney Porter • He was an American short-story writer. • He was born in Greensborn , North Carolina on September 11, 1862. • In 1896, he was charged with fraud but he fled to Honduras and stayed there for 6 months. • His famous story is “The Gift ofMaji ” • “The Last Leaf”, first published in the 1950’s.

The Last Leaf  is a short story by  O. Henry  published in his 1907 collection  The Trimmed Lamp and Other Stories . The story first appeared on October 15, 1905, in the  New York World . [1] [2] The story is set in  Greenwich Village  during a pneumonia epidemic. It tells the story of an old artist who saves the life of a young neighbouring artist, dying of pneumonia, by giving her the will to live. Through her window she can see an old ivy creeper (growing on a nearby wall), gradually shedding its leaves as autumn turns into winter, and she has taken the thought into her head that she will die when the last leaf falls. The leaves fall day by day, but the last lone leaf stays on for several days. The ill woman's health quickly recovers. At the story's end, we learn that the old artist, who always wanted to produce a masterpiece painting but had never had any success, spent considerable time painting with great realism a leaf on the wall for the whole night. Furthermore, the old artist himself dies of pneumonia contracted while being out in the wet and cold .

The scene of the story of "The Last Leaf" is the Greenwich artist colony in New York City. Over the past century, it has developed from a poor settlement to a world-famous art center and tourist attraction.
