Nationalism

Nationalism according to… Teodoro A. Agoncillo Alejandro Lichauco Horacio de la Costa, S.J. Claro M. Recto

Teodoro Agoncillo Born on the 9 th of November 1912 in Lemery , Batangas and died on the 14 th of January 1985. One of the most renowned and respected historians in the Philippines. Advocated for understanding history from the Filipino point of view.

Agoncillo on Nationalism Nationalism is emotionally charged, the distillation of emotion, sentiment, and idea. Nationalism is a sentiment which expresses the people’s longing to live an independent political life, to direct their economic and social improvement and to protect their interest.

Alejandro Lichauco Born on the 20 th of October 1927, and died on the 22 nd of May 2015. Filipino lawyer and economist. He was a delegate to the Constitutional Convention representing the first district of Rizal in 1971. Jailed by the Marcos regime for opposing the dictator’s agenda.

Lichauco on Nationalism Nationalism is the power. It is a philosophy of power concerned with strategies, methods, and processes of building, developing, and nourishing the power of a state as an organic entity. Nationalists view the nation as a community of nation-states who must live as well as compete constantly with each other. If a state must have strength and power, it must first acquire real independence. Without independence, a people will be unable to pursue a course that would bring strength and power to themselves as a state.

Horacio de la Costa, S.J. Born on the 9 th of May 1916 in Mauban, Tayabas , Quezon and died on the 20 th of March 1977 in Quezon City. Ordained a Jesuit priest at the age of 30, he became, at age 55, the first Filipino provincial superior of this religious order, the Society of Jesus. The sole voice in the Catholic Church to defend and advocate for the transition of the Rizal Bill into law.

de la Costa on Nationalism Nationalism is not only a fact; it is a power. Nationalism seem to imply something more than a sentiment, a feeling of affection or love. It is not merely a movement of the will; it is an apprehension or construct of the intellect or what we today called ideology.

Claro M. Recto Born on 8 th of February 1890 in Tiaong , Tayabas , Quezon and died on the 2 nd of October 1960 in Rome, Italy. He played a key role in framing the 1935 Philippine Constitution. Recto contributed several political works and was seen as the finest mind of his generation, known for his intellectual skills in debates and arguments. Author of the Rizal Bill.

Recto on Nationalism Nationalism is nourished by a sense of history. It is of its essence to know profoundly the past so that we may be in complete oneness with the men who made that history in intimate communion with their thoughts, their deeds, and their noble lives. Nationalism is the natural antagonist of colonialism. It is a vital force
