FIGURES OF SPEECH – A WORD OR PHRASE USED IN NON-LITERAL SENSE FOR RHETORICAL OR VIVID EFFECT.

LEISIM

1. SIMILE - a figure of speech in which a comparison is made between unlike objects using the words like or as .

Examples: Her skin was as white as snow. Grace was as light as a feather. You are acting like a baby. He is like the sun that shines in the morning.

HTAEMROP

2. METAPHOR - a comparison is drawn between two unlike ideas without the use of like or as.

Examples: Franz is a teddy bear. That boy is a pig. Anne is an angel.

OBYREPHLE

3. HYPERBOLE – is a major exaggeration or overstatement. Authors use this figure of speech to emphasize or add humor.

Examples: My backpack weighs a ton. I’ve told you a million times. I almost died laughing.

4. ONOMATOPOEIA – is a word that sounds like its meaning.

Examples : The cows go moo every morning. The bees buzz every time someone gets close their hive. The fireworks went boom and colored the night skies with red and white

PERSONIFICATION – figure of speech giving human traits or characteristics to something that isn’t human, such as animals, objects or non-living things.

Examples: The coconut tree shook her long hair. The flowers danced in the gentle breeze. The fire swallowed the entire forest.

IRONY – is a figure of speech in which words are used in such a way that their intended meaning is different from the actual meaning of the words.

-It may also be a situation that ends up in quite a different way than what is generally anticipated.

Examples: The doctor is as kind-hearted as a wolf. His friend’s hand was as soft as a rock. The students was given excellent on getting zero in exam.

ALLITERATION – the repetition of beginning consonant sounds.

Examples: Brad wore his blue and brown blazer. Harry held his head high. Lay loves lemonades and lollipops. Six swans went swimming in the sea.
