3. Placenta This is a feto -maternal organ. It has two components: Fetal part – develops from the chorionic sac Maternal part – derived from the endometrium(functional layer) The placenta and the umbilical cord are transport system for substances between the mother and the fetus.

4. Functions Of Placenta

5. Respiratory Function This process occurs through simple diffusion. During pregnancy, mother and fetus have increased metabolic demands. Therefore, she inhales more O2. So, O2 concentration is increased in mother and CO2 is increased in fetus.

6. Excretory Function All the waste formed inside the fetus like urea, uric acid, creatinine are to be excreted out of the body. However, fetus is inside the uterus and cannot throw out his own waste. So, inside mother this concentration is less in blood whereas more in fetus.
