Agenda 1 2 3 4 5 Introduction About our Topic 4 Principle of waste management How to promote our agenda in youngsters Summary

TOPIC : 4R’s Reduce, Recycle, Restore, Recover Hello to all, Today we are going to present a ppt on the topic 4R’s principle of waste management in front of u all. Our main motive to select this topic is telling u all that we know this principles but don’t apply this in our day to day life. If we use this principle we can save our motherearth from land and earth pollution.

REDUCE The first R in the waste hierarchy is “Reduce.” The crucial thing in the waste management procedure is to maintain a perfect balance in consumption and recycle & reuse. If the consumption is less, the rate of recycling or reuse will also be less We should reduce the use of plastic and other polymer product because they are not disposable in the soil and can be very dangerous in the future. We should reduce our waste so we have less wastages to recycle or recover . 4

5 Ways To Reduce Waste And Move Towards Waste-Free Living 1) Compostable items open up a wonderful path to living a waste-free existence. In truth, composting is arguably one of the greenest things we can do . It’s also among the best ways to reduce food waste in your home. 2) As our mission to reduce waste at home gets us away from using disposable items, we can gradually move into making more eco-friendly products. 3) Buying in bulk is another great way to reduce waste at home that makes sense both environmentally and economically. 4) Let’s face it, not everyone can afford to purchase brand new, high quality products all the time. 5) On the other end of the waste reduction spectrum, when we have things we don’t want,  donating them to charity  should always be our first priority.

CASE STUDY This is the case study of Pune, Maharashtra in which they increase awareness and education about the benefits of reducing the waste and waste segregation and the harms of dumping and littering. • Pune city is part of the Pune Urban Agglomeration, which has a population of more than 5 million persons, according to the 2011 India Census data. .Pune city has a population of 4 million persons . There are 1.2 million residentials commercial and institutional properties. .The city aware its people to use less plastic . And that’s the reason behind Pune's success towards uses of less plastic in comparison to other states. So our 1 st R the reduce one perfectly fits with the case study of the city Pune. 6 Presentation title 20XX

Pune: The Underdogs This case study was produced under the Closing the Loop initiative of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP).For more detail analysis you can watch this video https://youtu.be/AFaKsBulrnw?feature=shared on You tube by Anurag Pandey.

Plastic waste consumption in Pune YEAR PVC PIPES CEMENT BAGS SMALL PLASTIC PIPES MILK BAG 2016 2.5% 2.38% 1.75% 15.6% 2017 1.2% 1.1% 1.54% 9.85% 2018 0.08% 0.18% 1.38% 7.17% 2019 0.05% 0.15% 1.25% 5.26% 8 Presentation title 20XX

So we can see in the previous slide the consumption of plastic in the state of Pune gradually decreases in these four years. This was done by the awareness programs organised by government and environmental activists. There hard work made the city of Pune less plastic consumable in comparison to other states of India . . In the year 2016 Pune has total of 2.5% of whole plastic PVC pipes consumption of India but it gradually decreases to 0.05% in the year 2019. . Same goes with the consumption of milk bag as it decreases rapidly from 15.6% to 5.26% between the year 2016-2019. 9 Presentation title 20XX

Again if we see the chart in the year 2016 cement bags were used 2.38% of the whole India which was quite high as Pune was not a Tech based city but it gradually decreases to 015% in the year 2019, that shows the level of commitment by the government and the environmental activists to make Pune a smart city. And now in the year 2024 Pune is considered as a smart city with some only some other states like Surat, Indore , etc. .And in the 2016 the amount of small plastic pipes were 1.75% of the total consumption of India but it also decreases to only 1.25% in the year 2019. “So if Pune can does this level of reducing the amount waste then why can’t whole India, we should be take it as challenge and should reduce the use of plastic”. 10 Presentation title 20XX

Now by batchmate Pratyush Raj is going to present the topic Recycle in front of you all. 11 Presentation title 20XX

RECYCLE “Recycling” is the process of collecting and processing materials like paper, plastic, and glass so they can be turned into new products. It’s a way to give old items a new life instead of sending them to the landfill . Food waste is still a significant problem. In the United States, 30-40% of all food produced is wasted. This is a big problem because it means throwing away good food and causing environmental issues.

WHAT ARE THE WAYS TO RECYCLE OUR WASTE Only put recyclable materials like paper, cardboard, metal, plastic, and glass in your recycling bin for pickup. Rinse plastic and glass recyclables under water to remove any lingering debris or contaminants that may ruin other items. For batteries, electronics, oil, and other hazardous materials, coordinate a pickup or drop-off at a specialty recycling center. Even if it isn’t required, do your best to keep similar items together to make things easier for the recycling facility. Stack cardboard on top of other cardboard, and keep your aluminum cans in the same portion of the bin. Put recyclables directly into your bin without bagging them . Regular plastic bags can't be recycled curbside. If you want to bag your items, use  recycling bags . 13

Supporting recycling means feeding this loop by not only recycling, but also supporting recycled products. We can now find high recycled content in everything from printer paper to office chairs. We can support the environmental activists by buying more recycling products and reducing the use of waste in the future.

Recycle Your Water If you're a homeowner, consider rearranging your plumbing so that rainwater or  wastewater  from your shower and tub is used to flush your toilet. If you have a garden, water it with leftover bathwater or dishwashing water (as long as you use a biodegradable soap).

20XX Presentation title 16

This quote by McKenzie Jones explains that if we can reduce the amount of waste we generate in a year then we can save a lot of effort, money and time on recycling that waste and don’t waste our precious time in those things to make them reuseable again. He said if the ultimate goal is fulfilled that is to prevent people from wasting reuseable things then we don’t need the 2 nd R that is recycle the wastable items. 17 Presentation title 20XX

Now, as I conclude my topic now my batchmate Krrish is going to present the topic Reuse in front of you all. Thanks everyone 18 Presentation title 20XX

REUSE “ Reusing” means using things again instead of throwing them away. There are a lot of creative ways that you can reuse anything in your household. For example, you can reuse old cardboard boxes to create fun DIY projects or as storage containers. This not only saves money but also reduces the number of boxes that end up in the trash. Another example of “reuse” is using an empty glass jar to store leftovers instead of throwing them away. This way, you give the jar a second life and reduce the need for new containers. The primary purpose of reusing old things is to minimize the amount of waste, whether you do it on your own through modifications or you donate it to someone needy. 19 Presentation title 20XX

WAYS TO REUSE WASTE Plastic straws are notoriously bad for the environment. They  endanger wildlife and contribute  to the tons of plastic waste that is harming the planet. It's ideal to avoid using plastic straws altogether, but if you have any lying around, think twice before throwing them away.

Old textiles such as sheets, towels and cotton shirts can easily be turned into wash rags with a good pair of scissors.  Throw the old items into your next load of laundry to make sure they’re clean before they take on new life, then simply cut them up into rectangles with a sharp pair of scissors. Store them with your cleaning supplies and they’ll be ready for your next spring cleaning.

If you’re one of the few people who still gets a print newspaper delivered to your home, be aware that there are several ways to reuse that newspaper once you (and the rest of your family) have read it.  You can use it as packing paper for fragile C hina, wrapping paper for gifts or as a cleaning aid. Simply dip crumpled newspaper in water mixed with a splash of white vinegar and clear up those windows in an instant, without harmful chemicals .

C reate packing materials  from plastic bags to protect breakables when moving or layer plastic bags between valuables when storing. You can also use them to provide extra padding when mailing packages. F uture shopping trips  can become less wasteful by reusing plastic bags. Store them in your trunk or door cubby – just remember to grab them before entering the store!

If you’re like me, the idea of leftovers is repulsive – there’s nothing notoriously wrong with leftovers, of course. Except the name, leftovers; makes me think of a lion who can’t devour an entire gazelle and it sits there for days on end, collecting flies, mosquitos, and thousands of diseases and bacteria .

So from this slide it is the end of my part now the last topic Recover will be presented by my batchmate Ritesh . Thanks everyone 25 Presentation title 20XX

RECOVER Most of the materials thrown in the garbage can be used & processed in ways other than being destroyed. Such a process is recovering. E.g.: a. methane gas can be recovered from decomposing organic matter. b. If plastic waste remains left over after being reduced, reused, and recycled. It can be used to make energy. It converts waste products into resources.

Ways to recover our waste Contact your local city or district council to find out what they collect. This is the recovery of waste without any pre-processing. For example, waste oils that cannot be refined for reuse in vehicles can be burnt for energy recovery. Recovering the energy from waste oil reduces our dependence on coal and imported oil .

Promoting 4R’s in youngsters By growing awareness and understanding our environmental impacts on our planet, we can be better informed about where and how to act. A lack of awareness and responsibility has added to polluted land, sea, and air, from a lack of consideration of the environment in managing waste to mass-producing throw-away items to keep up with demand. Thankfully, things are changing, and understanding the importance of the 4Rs can undoubtedly help us inform our choices. 28

Areas of focus Impact of 4R’s on our environment The 4 R's provides an ecologically sound and environmentally friendly approach to minimizing and managing waste and waste streams. The best way to contribute to our eco-system is to reduce our waste Reduce is the best way to contribute in our eco-system as it encourages us to reduce our waste and if we can reduce our usage then we have to not be focused and spent our money in the other 3R’s and it can save our valuable time. 29 Presentation title 20XX
