The desire to restore Meccan Islam Meccan Islam is the preferred interpretation of most Muslims Meccan Islam sought to be ‘a religion of peace’, or tolerance mingled with zeal Meccan Islam was a religion without an army Meccan Islam was a moral reform movement Meccan Islam was founded on ‘divine poetry’ and sermon on prophets Meccan Islam was only a local quarrel Meccan Islam was a minority faith Meccan Islam was a persecuted faith Meccan Islam grew in and out of a fight over a religious shrine: the Kaaba Meccan Islam reflects the religion of the majority of Muslims worldwide

The difficulty of studying Muhammad 1. We can neither verify nor falsify the narrative of Muhammad. We have very little independent historical evidence until 690 AD (60 years after his death). 2.We cannot even verify that the Mecca of today was the original Mecca. 3. Muslims do not appreciate any study on Muhammad that does not honour him as Allah’s final prophet. To decode the Qur’an you have to study it chronologically and in parallel with the Sira. 4. Non-Muslims are said to be incapable of fully grasping Islam or Muhammad because they refuse to submit to Allah and believe his message. Anything they say stems from unbelief and therefore it is to be dismissed. 5. Muslim theologians insist that the only legitimate interpretation of Muhammad comes from the Hadiths and Sharia law. Anything disagreeing with that is false. 6. Islam is a closed religion and Muslims resist critical scholarly research. 7. The Muhammad of Medina will attempt to abrogate the Islam of Mecca. 8. Muslims say: “You are not welcome to study this religion.” Do it anyway.
