Electromagnetic Radiation
Electromagnetic Radiation is a form of
energy that travels through space .
It does not require any medium and
can propagate in vaccum.

Types of Electromagnetic Radiation
There are various types of
electromagnetic waves, ranging from
low to high frequencies.Itincludes –

Radio wave
Microwave
Infrared radiation
Visible light
Ultravoiletradiation
X ray
Gamma rays

Each of these waves have its own
characteristics ,unique properties and
applications .

"

Health considerations
Ionizing radiations has higher energy and
the potential to ionize atoms ,posing more
significant health risks.
UV Radiation and sun exposure.
Medical Imaging
Wireless technologies.
Occupational exposure.

Epidemiological Studies
Precautionary Measures
Regulatory Guidelines

Effects in eye
Ultraviolet Radiation [UV]:
UV Radiation ,particularly from sunlight, can contribute to
eye conditions like cataract and macular degeneration.
Blue light exposure:
Prolong exposure to blue light emitted by digital screens and LED
lighting causes digital eye strain ,disrupted sleep pattern and long
term effects on retinal cells.

Radiation from Devices:
Electromagnetic radiation emitted by electronic devices like computer
, smartphones and tablets emits non ionizing radiation which causes eye
discomfort and fatigue.

Preventive measures
Using blue light filters while using electronic
gadgets like mobile phones ,laptops etc
Following 20-20 rule while using electronic
devices
Proper lighting conditions in work and living
space.

Preventive measures for protection of eyes by
using shades or UV protection glasses.

Occupational considerations
Using eye protection in occupational settings
where there is risk of exposure to intense light or
radiation , such as welding or laser works .

Regular eye examinations:
Encourage regular eye check-ups to monitor eye
health and catch potential issues early on.

Conclusion
It is important to understand the effects of
electromagnetic radiation, particularly from
sources like mobile phones , on our eyes is crucial
for promoting eye health in the digital age. While
the evidence suggests potential concern such as
digital eye strain, blue light exposure, and other
discomfort , it’s important to approach this topic
with a balanced perspective.
