FLANNEL BOARD Flannel graph (sometimes called a flannel board) is a storytelling system that uses a board covered with flannel fabric, usually resting on an easel. It is very similar to Fuzzy Felt, although its primary use is as a storytelling medium, rather than as a toy.
Contd… It can also be used for displaying various objects such as pictures, drawings, graphs, magazines or newspapers ‘cut outs’ and illustrated material. It serves as an ideal medium for display of prepared items.
Uses of flannel board Teachers often use flannel boards to enhance storytelling or concept. Save time during class presentation. They may use pictures of the characters and other important parts of the story to illustrate it as they read. Flannel boards are also used for "acting out" songs and poems.
Contd… To attract and motivate learner, stimulates his curiosity and imagination. They provide simple and rapid manipulation. They are used for encouraging visual presentation of ideas and concepts. To develop creative activities for students.
Contd… They can be used to demonstrate science and math concepts to young children, like the life cycle of a frog or butterfly or addition. They are also commonly used in Sunday school to tell Bible stories. Flannel boards can also be used in students' centers so that the students can manipulate the pieces, providing hands-on learning.

Advantages of using flannel board Permits numerous and varied arrangements of visua1 materials. Is appealing, because the audience is fascinated in watching the steps in the presentation. Permits the development of a complete story. Permits the use of either chart or small pieces of material.
Contd… Promotes conscientious planning, which must precede the development of the material in the first place. Challenges one to develop symbols to portray such things as abstractions. Materials can be packed and transported. Permits use of various colours, which may be used for specific purposes. Materials can be left on board after meeting closes for those who wish to have more complete notes.
Contd… Is effective because it permits two techniques for delivering a message, word of mouth-sound and symbols or pictures-sight. Easier to construct materials for flannel board than to make slides or movies. Speaker works in front of his audience in well-lighted surroundings.
Contd… Chronological development of ideas on board promotes ease in note taking. After symbols are developed they can quite easily be used in constructing attractive designs.
Disadvantages of using flannel board Transportation and storing of boards and materials is a problem. Suitable tables to support boards must be available. Time and cost of making material for presentation present a problem. Cost of boards themselves can't be overlooked.
Contd… Presentation is limited a new idea involves a lapse of time before the new material can be added. Might tend to deter one from using other more effective methods and techniques when it is evident that other methods might be more appropriate. To tell a complete story it often takes either too much board space or smaller designs and materials some of which cannot be seen well
Contd… Requires considerable ingenuity and imagination to construct effective varied materials. Materials must be attractively prepared.
Suggestions for use: Judicious use of flannel board should be made. Crowding of display material should be avoided. Subject matter should be related to the unit of work under study and adopted to the age group that will view it. Material for the flannel board should be intelligently collected. Select the materials that are attractive and large enough to be visible.
Contd… The use of colour should be made to bring the main points into prominence. When many items have to shown, these may be pre-arranged in separate folders and logical sequence should be made. Orient the class to the general topic and the use of flannel board if necessary.
Contd… The flannel board items should be systematically presented. Place the flannel board at eye level, if possible and slightly backward inclined. The demonstration should be built up through verbal explanation and visual cues. Store the material properly for future use.
Definition of flash cards Flash cards can be defined as small compact cards, which flashed before the class to bring an idea about any topic.
Instructions for use of flash cards The size of a flash card should be 10”x12” or 22”x28” (length x breadth). Used for small group of 15 to 30 people. Provides variety and activity for group. The message has to be brief. Prepare a picture for each idea, which will give visual impact to the idea like simple line drawing or photographs or cartoons by using suitable colours.
Contd… Content of each flash card will be written on the back of each flash card. It should be adapted to the local condition. Ten to twelve cards for one topic can be used. It needs drill or preview. It can be used either individually or in combination with other charts.
Points to be remembered Put the cards in sequential order, before starting the explanation. A series or set of cards can be prepared on a single topic. The story on each card must be familiar. Must use simple words and local terminology. Hold the cards at chest level where people can see clearly.
Contd… Hold against body and not in air. Face different parts of the group, to show cards to all. Glance down at card as to make sure to give correct information. Use pointer doesn’t cover the matter with hand. Be enthusiastic and enjoy while explaining the matter.
Re-captualization 1. What do you understand by flannel board? 2. Describe the advantages for using flannel board? 3. What should be the size of a flash card? 10”x12” 12”x8” 6”x14” 18”x12” 4. Flash cards can be used to teach a group having ……. to ……. number of persons.
