EFFECTIVENESS OF PEER TUTORING IN IMPROVING THE MATHEMATICAL PROBLEM SOLVING OF GRADE 9 STUDENTS   Rosalie I. Ferrer Teacher III, DCIS

Context and Rationale In Domalandan Center Integrated School peer tutoring is put in place as a scheme to help students improve their performance in Mathematics and allowed to proceed with the content material at their own pace. As per results of the First Quarter Examination in Mathematics 9, Section Einstein had a mean of 27.42; Galileo, 21.00; Aristotle, 19.70; Newton, 21.09; and, Darwin, 22.21. Analysis of the interpreted test results indicate how the 5 sections in Grade 9 performed unsatisfactorily in the test. The item analysis showed how the students had the most difficulty in problem solving. Moreover, only 18 out of the 165 total number of Grade 9 students got a grade or rating ranging from 85-90 in the said quarter. This goes to show that majority of the students, 99 as per record of the researcher got a grade ranging from 80- below while the remaining 48 students are representative of those whose grades range from 84- 81. The poor performance of the Grade 9 students in Mathematics in the First Quarter Examination led to the proposed conduct of this study. It shall utilize peer tutoring as an intervention to address the performance of students in Mathematics.

Research Questions This study seeks to determine the effectiveness of peer tutoring in improving the mathematical problem solving of low-performing Grade 9 students of Domalandan Center Integrated School during the school year 2018 -2019. Specifically, it aims to answer the following: 1. What is the level of performance of the Grade 9 learners in Mathematics during the pretest? 2. What is the level of performance in Mathematics of the Grade 9 learners after peer tutoring based on the results of the pretest? 3. Is there a significant difference in the pretest and posttest results in Mathematics of the Grade 9 learners?

Methodology a. Participants and/or other Sources of Data and Information Participants of the study shall be the 18 Grade 9 students who got a rating of 85-90 in Mathematics in the First Quarter who shall also serve as tutors while 99 out of the 168 total number of students whose grades ranged from 80- below shall serve as tutees. Random sampling shall be used in identifying the 99 tutees from among the 168 Grade 9 students who got a grade of 80- below in Mathematics in the First Quarter. b. Data Gathering Methods This study shall be quasi- experimental in design. It shall make use of a pretest and a post test. According to Moore (2008), a quasi-experimental study is a type of evaluation which aims to determine whether a programme or intervention has the intended effect on a study’s participant.
