THE OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY To explain the intrinsic elements of the novel To describe the persistence of the main character to get a better life To describe the moral values that can be taken from the novel

CHAPTER II THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK The intrinsic method is often called the objective approach because the intrinsic method studies the literary work intrinsically by analyzing the elements of the literary work. (Subhan,2010:33) Objective approach

The objective approach or the intrinsic method has a view that a literary work has intrinsic elements (some critics call them literary facts and literary devices) such as theme, character and characterization, plot, setting, point of view. (Subhan, 2012:67) Intrinsic element T heme refers to the main thought of this theme as a general statement about the human condition expressible in a sentence. (Hunt, 1997:1580) Theme

Character and Characterization C haracters in the novel (prose) can be divided into two groups: (1) main or major characters, and (2) minor characters. (Subhan, 2010:8-13) T he characterization, characters in the novel can be divided into two groups, namely flat characters and round character . (Subhan, 2010:15-17) Plot P lot has a structure which contains five parts. They are exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, resolution. (Subhan, 2010:24)

Setting Setting can become the background of the story in a novel. setting is usually divided into two: (I) setting of place (2) setting of time. (Subhan,2010:21) Point of view There are three kinds point of view. They are : First person point of view , Second person point of view, Third person point of view. (Abram, 1981:271)

Moral Value Moral value is simply an important kind of instrumental value. Actions and traits of character have moral value only insofar as they contribute in a certain way to happiness: to enhancing pleasure or reducing pain or both, i.e., to hedonic value. (Audi,2007:47)

Type of study The type of research is categorized into a library research; it is a kind of research by reading sources including books and articles. The researcher divided the sources into the primary data and secondary data. Data collecting method There are some steps that the researcher collect the data are as follows: Critical reading Visiting library Making notes Categorizing data CHAPTER III RESEARCH METHOD

Data analyzing method Data analysis that is used by the witer is qualitative descriptive. The researcher tries to present clear information and describes the persistence of the main character to get a better life as seen in Gail Honeyman’s Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine. Then the data are analyzed and interpreted by objective approach to reveal the novel.

CHAPTER IV Research Finding&DISCUSSION Theme Character and characterization The theme of the novel is the lack of meaningful relationship. The main character is Eleanor Oliphant. Her characterization are: Introverted, sensitive, helpful, disciplinary, dedicated.

Plot The plot used in this novel is progressive plot . Setting Setting in the novel can be divided into two: (1) setting of place: Glasgow, Eleanor’s house, In a hospital, In the couseling room. (2) Setting of time: Yesterday, Monday, Wednesday, Once per week, Friday . Point of view The point of view of the novel is first person. Eleanor Oliphant as the main character the first person in the novel.

C. Moral Value of The Novel Be someone who easily forgives other people’s mistake. W e have to get out of our comfort zone to have different experience. If we do the best effort we will get the best outcome.
