Quantitative Research

Kinds of Quantitative Research

Quantitative Research - Ask Specific/narrow Qs - Collects data in numerical form -Analyses data using statistics - expressed in numbers and graphs Qualitative Research - Ask broad / general Qs - Collects data consisting largely of words or text -Descriptions or analysis of words or themes - expressed in words

Quantitative Research - used to test or confirm theories and assumptions - methods include experiments, observations recorded as numbers, and surveys with closed-ended questions. Qualitative Research - used to understand concepts, thoughts or experiences. - methods include interviews with open-ended questions, observations described in words, and literature reviews that explore concepts and theories.

01 Kinds of Quantitative Research

Descriptive Design Sometimes called survey research, it aims to describe systematically the facts and characteristics of a given population or area of interest, factually and accurately Examples: What are the study habits of SHS students in SNHS? What factors affected the SHS track choice of SHS students?

Correlational Design Aims to describe and measure the degree of association between two or more variables or sets of scores . Examples: Does the time spent by students using Facebook have any relationship with their self-esteem ? Is there a relationship between internet availability at home and student’s average sleeping time at night?

Experimental Design In an experimental study, researchers look at the effect(s) of at least one independent variable on one or more dependent variables. -tests hypotheses about cause-and-effect relationships Examples: The effectiveness of multimedia assisted methods in SHS Mathematics teaching The effect of mobile learning to SHS students

02 Importance of Research in the Different Fields

Education Quantitative research can be used in measuring the level of performance of students as well as the teachers. It can also be used to assess the effectiveness of the methods used, the different programs conducted, or the satisfaction of stakeholders.

Education Research methodologies give teachers the tools to analyze and make informed decisions about their practice that leads to an expansion of knowledge and discoveries in teaching and learning strategies across various cultural and educational communities.

Business Business decisions that are based on good intelligence and good market research can minimize risk and pay dividends and by making market research part and parcel of the business process.

Social Sciences Research in social sciences deals with the systematic method of discovering new facts or of verifying old facts, their sequence, inter-relationship, casual explanations and the natural laws which cover them.

Anthropology Many discoveries in this field like human behavior in the society, racial conflicts and human evolution have given enormous contributions to the improvement of human life.

Communication Researchers are often interested in how an understanding of a particular communication phenomena might be generalized to a larger population. Example: What communicative behaviors are used to respond to students displaying emotional stress?

Medicine Experimental research designs may enhance the quality of medical education. Health care procedures, efficacy of medicines and drugs, vaccines, effective medicines are all products of quantitative research.

Science and Technology Experiments, New Devices, inventions, discoveries, and innovations are all products of research.

“ “The heart and soul of good writing is research; you should write not what you know but what you can find out about.” -Robert J. Sawyer
