Nature of Inquiry and Research/ Qualitative Research and Its Importance in Daily Life PRACTICAL RESEARCH 1
Content Standards: The learner demonstrates understanding of: 1. the importance of research in daily life 2. the characteristics, processes, and ethics of research 3. quantitative and qualitative research 4. the kinds of research across fields Performance Standards: Use appropriate kinds of research in making decisions. OBJECTIVES:
Specific Objectives: After going through this module, the learner is expected to: Shares research experiences and knowledge./ Explains the importance of research in daily life. Describes characteristics, processes, and ethics of research. Differentiates quantitative from qualitative research. Provide examples of research in areas of interest. OBJECTIVES:
ABSTRACTION 01
RESEARCH Research is an organized investigation and study of materials and sources to create facts and reach new inferences. Research has come up with developing appropriate solutions to improve the individual’s quality of life. Although it may take place in a different setting and may use different methods, scientific research is universally a systematic and objective search for reliable knowledge (Walker, 2010).
RESEARCH Research is a verified approach of thinking and employing legalized instruments and steps to obtain a more adequate solution to a problem that is otherwise impossible to address under ordinary means (Crawford, as cited by Alcantara & Espina , 1995).
RESEARCH In most cases, research helps society to answer the WHAT and HOW questions. It must be a proper investigation and should reach a valid conclusion that would facilitate the finding of answers to the questions. Some of these questions are: How can research affect society ? What is the impact of the research to daily life?
Generally, the purpose of research may be expressed in a capsule as: To discover is to find truth about a subject which was not yet part of the stream of knowledge. To verify is to find whether what was found to be true fifty years ago is still true today. - To predict circumstances which are about to happen
2 CATEGORIES OF RESEARCH 1. Basic Research : This is the type of research that is a purely direct application but increasing the nature of understanding about the problem. It develops the scientific theories to be more understandable to the readers.
2 CATEGORIES OF RESEARCH 2. Applied Research: It is a type of research that needs an answer to a specific question. It provides solutions and validation in order to apply to the real setting.
CHARACTERISTICS OF RESEARCH EMPIRICAL - is based on observations and experiments of theories. SYSTEMATIC - follows orderly and sequential procedures, based on valid procedures and principles.
CHARACTERISTICS OF RESEARCH 3. CONTROLLED - In research, all variables, except those that are tested/ experimented on, are kept constant. 4. EMPLOYS HYPOTHESIS - refers to a search for facts, answers to questions and solutions to problems.
CHARACTERISTICS OF RESEARCH 5. ANALYTICAL - shows analytical procedures in gathering the data, whether historical, descriptive, and or case study. 6. OBJECTIVE - it is unbiased and logical. All findings are logically based on real-life situations. 7. ORIGINAL WORK - it requires its own examination and produces the data needed to complete the study.
RESEARCH PROCESSES
RESEARCH PROCESSES 1. Define the research problem. “The researcher identifies English language proficiency as a problem of aspiring maritime students in qualifying for admission to prestigious maritime institutions.”
RESEARCH PROCESSES 2. Review the literature. “The researcher reviews previous studies conducted about English language proficiency and the experienced difficulties of aspiring maritime students.”
RESEARCH PROCESSES 3. Formulate hypothesis. “The researcher hypothesizes that the implementation of English-only Policy (EOP) in the classroom can improve the English language proficiency of Pre-Baccalaureate Maritime students.”
RESEARCH PROCESSES 4. Prepare the research design. “The researcher uses an experimental design on exploring the experiences of the students in implementing EOP. ”
RESEARCH PROCESSES 5. Collect Data. “The researcher collects data through interview and focus group discussion.”
RESEARCH PROCESSES 6.Analyze data. “The researcher analyzes the data by drawing patterns and themes from the generated data.”
RESEARCH PROCESSES 6.Interpret and report findings. “The researcher interprets and reports the findings based on the collected and analyzed data to solve the research problem.”
