Predicting Outcomes
•Definition: Predicting outcomes is the
ability to predict what will happen next
based on two things:
1.Clues given in the picture or story
2.What you already know
Predicting Outcomes
1.One way to predict outcomes is to
look at a picture.
2.You can see what is happening, and
then predict what is most likely to
happen next.
3.You will look for “clues” in the picture
that will help you predict what
outcome will be.
Predicting Outcomes
•Picture Example 1
•What will most likely happen next?
Predicting Outcomes
•If you predicted that this will be soon be
a house, you predicted right.
Predicting Outcomes
•Picture example 2.
•What will most likely happen next?
Predicting Outcomes
•The pitcher will throw the baseball hard
and try to strike out the batter.
Is this what you said?
Predicting Outcomes
•How did you do that?
•How did you make that prediction?
-You looked at what was happening in the
picture and based on what you saw
happening, you were able to predict what was
going to be the outcome, or what was most
likely going to happen next.
-You may have experienced events similar to
the pictures, and you have seen the outcome
before.
Predicting Outcomes
•How we use our past experiences to
help us predict future outcomes can be
seen in the following example:
Predicting Outcomes
•Your neighbor has mowed his lawn
every Saturday morning for as long as
you can remember. Can you predict
what your neighbor will be doing next
Saturday?
Predicting Outcomes
•You can predict your neighbor will be
mowing his lawn. If he has been doing
it for as long as you can remember, it is
pretty likely he will be doing it this
Saturday.
Predicting Outcomes
•You also need to predict outcomes
when you are reading.
•It can be as short as one sentence, or
as long as a long story.
Predicting Outcomes
•What have we learned?
1.Look for clues.
2.Use past experiences.
3.Add up the useful information that is
available to predict the most likely
outcome.
