Let us try to do activity 1. Identify the name of the equipment. Write your answer in a separate sheet of paper.

Heaters or brooders

1. Charcoal stove/ kerosene stove- these are used in places where electricity is not available or costly and where power interruption is quite common. This stove are covered with plates or pans to sustain the heat in the brooding area.

2. Gas Brooder- natural gas, LPG or methane is used and connected to heating element which is hanged 3 to 5 feet above the bird to provide heat. It is attached with a canopy- type reflectors to reflect heat towards the chicks in the poultry

3. Electrical brooder is thermostatically controlled heating system that spread required amount of heat uniformly above large area, this avoid crowding of chicks under brooder directly. One electrical brooder can be used for 300 to 400 chicks in the poultry

4. Infra -red bulbs-is a self- reflecting bulb and hence no need of reflector over the bulbs.150 and 250 watts bulbs are used to provide enough heat to the chicks in the poultry house

5. Reflectors/hovers- these reflectors are called hovers. These reflectors of heat and light are used for the chicks in the poultry house.

Feeding Equipment 1. Automatic feeder- the feeds is supplied to the entire length of the poultry by specially designed feed troughs with auger type or chain type devices to move the feed from the feed bins to the other end

2. Linear feeder- different sizes of linear feeder with guards are available. These feeders are usually made of galvanized iron.

3. Circular feeder-these type of equipment are semi-automatic feeders and can hold 5 to 7 kg feed in its cone at a time

4. Shell grit box-it is used to provide shell grit to the layer bird as a supplemental source of calcium needed by the bird.

Water Equipment 1. Water softeners and filters- in this type of equipment, water with high total dissolved solids will cause deposits on the humidity controls, spray nozzles, jets and valve seats, so this equipment is needed in the poultry house.

2.Water heaters- hot water is important for operating most hatchery tray washers and for general clean up. A large capacity boiler is generally used to provide hot water.

Watering Equipment 1. Pan and jar type- this type of waterer for chick is circular in shape, having two compartments.

2. Water basin made of plastic/wood/ GI with grill- a separate grill is made to prevent the entry of birds inside the water.

3. Bell type automatic waterer- these type of waterer are made of high- impact plastic in a bell shape usually suspended from separate pipeline for the purpose of supplying water to the birds.

4. Nipple drinkers- these drinkers look like a nipple, when pressed water comes out from the nipple.

5. Manual drinker- they also referred as fountain drinkers because water comes out of the holes and flows like that in case of a fountain.
