Prepositions Definition and types

Definition A  preposition  is a word that indicates the relationship between a  noun  and the other words of a sentence. They explain relationships of sequence, space, and logic between the object of the sentence and the rest of the sentence. They help us understand order, time connections, and positions.

Linguistic Facts   First,  they are a  closed class of words  which means no new preposition gets added to the language. We use a fixed set of prepositions. Second,  prepositions do not have any other form. They cannot be plural, possessive, inflection, or anything else. Third,  most of the prepositions have many different contextual and natural uses. So, it is easy to be confused about preposition. Fourth,  sometimes a preposition works as nouns, adjectives, and adverbs. Prepositions can be of one, two, three, or even more words. Prepositions with two or more words are called  phrasal prepositions. There are some commonly used phrasal prepositions: because of, in case of, instead of, by way of, on behalf of, on account of, in care of, in spite of, on the side of, etc.

Some of the different types of Prepositions that we would do in this class are: Prepositions for Time 2. Prepositions for Place 3. Prepositions for Direction 4. Prepositions for Agent 5. Prepositions for Instrument

Prepositions of Time IN Months or years. Eg: In March, In 2020. Particular time of a day or month or a year. Eg:In evening, In the third week of April, In Spring. A specific time in past or future. Eg: In 20 th century, in the stone age, in the the future. ON A Day. Eg: On Sunday, On Monday Dates. Eg: On 15 th of April, On 2 nd October. A particular day. On my birthday, On Independence Day AT Time of a Clock. Eg: At Quarter to 2. at 9.30pm, at 4 o’clock Short and precise times. Eg: At lunch time, at bed time, at sunset. These prepositions are used to refer to time in various aspects. Eg: at,on,in, etc

Examples of Preposition of Time He started working  at 10 AM . The company called for a dinner  on 20th October . There is a holiday  in December .

We went through the crowd towards the stage. Next to, Beside, near, by Around something and not far away. Eg: There’s a tree next to / beside / by / near my house. There’s a playstation next to / beside / by / near my friend’s house Above Higher than something, but not directly higher than something. Eg: – She lives above my flat in Ohio. A captain is above a sergeant.

In Used for inside, Eg: Martha is in the car. On Placement of a particular thing attached to, or next to something Something displayed on something. Eg: She will sing on stage tomorrow. I will feature in a video on TV today. At An exact place where something is situated. Eg: She met me at the North main street . Between into/in the gap that separates two things, people or places.
