Present Continuous Tense An overview of usage, structure, and spelling rules
Introduction We use the Present Continuous to talk about: - Actions happening right now - Temporary actions Examples: • They are reading a book now. • I am staying with a friend this week. • My mum is cooking dinner in the kitchen.
Positive Structure I + am + eating. He/She/It + is + eating. We/You/They + are + eating. For all subjects, the verb takes -ing.
Negative Structure I + am not + eating. He/She/It + isn’t + eating. We/You/They + aren’t + eating. For all subjects, the verb takes -ing.
Question Structure Am I eating? Is he/she/it eating? Are we/you/they eating? For all subjects, the verb takes -ing.
Spelling Rules for -ing 1. Most verbs: add -ing → play → playing 2. Verbs ending in e: drop e + -ing → write → writing 3. One-syllable CVC: double final consonant → run → running 4. Verbs ending in ie: change to y + -ing → die → dying 5. Verbs ending in c: add k + -ing → panic → panicking
Time Expressions We usually use Present Continuous with: - now - right now - at the moment - currently - this week/weekend/month Example: We are playing cards now!
