WHAT ARE TENSES Tense is a grammatical concept that indicates the time of action or event. Tense provides temporal information and enables us to express actions that have happened in the past, are happening in the present, or will happen in the future

TYPES OF TENSES PRESENT TENSE- These are the tenses which tell about the actions which are taking place in the present PAST TENSE – These tenses tell us about the actions which had taken place in the past FUTURE TENSE- These tenses tell us about the actions that will take place in future

PRESENT TENSE The present tense refers to the action or event that takes place or is taking place in the present. It represents the current activity or the present state of being of the subject in the given context. examples:- The sun rises in the east. He plays the guitar beautifully. I enjoy reading books in my free time. The cat purrs contentedly when it's stroked. The river flows gently through the valley. The chef prepares delicious meals for the customers.

Types of Present Tense Simple present- is a verb tense that is used to talk about actions or states that are habitual, repeated or always true Examples 1. He runs every morning. 2. They play basketball on weekends. 3. The sun rises in the east. 4. Cats sleep a lot during the day. 5. It rains often in this region. 6. The Earth revolves around the sun.

Present Continuous Tense – used to denote an action that is continuing at the present moment Examples 1. They are playing football in the park this afternoon 2. The children are watching a movie in the living room 3. He is working on his project for school this week 4. My parents are traveling to Europe next month 5. The company is launching a new product tomorrow 6. I am attending a conference this weekend 7. She is learning to play the piano these days

Present Perfect Continuous Tense – used to represent an action that began in the recent past and is still continuing. EXAMPLES She has been working at the company since last year. He has been practicing the piano for weeks. She has been cooking dinner for the family since noon. I have been reading this book for a while. They have been playing tennis since morning. He has been jogging in the park for an hour.

Present Perfect Tense – used to indicate an action that is used to denote an action that is indefinite and still has its effect on the subject or object in the sentence. Examples 1. I have visited Paris twice 2. They have finished their homework. 3. We have lived in this city for five years. 4.The company has just released its latest product. 5. They have seen that movie multiple times. 6. He has worked at the same company since graduation.

PAST TENSE The ‘past tense’ form of a verb, as the term suggests, can be used to speak about or represent an event or action that already happened in the past . Examples I walked to the store yesterday. She finished her homework last night. They visited their grandparents last weekend. We watched a movie together on Friday. He cooked dinner for his family yesterday evening. I graduated from college two years ago.

Types of past tense Simple Past Tense – used to indicate an action or event that happened in the past Examples 1. I visited my grandparents last weekend. 2.He watched a movie last night. 3.We cooked dinner together. 4.She wrote a letter to her friend. 5.They traveled to Paris last summer. 6. He cleaned his room yesterday.

Past Continuous Tense – used to depict an action or event that was continuing in the past EXAMPLES 1. I was reading a book when the phone rang. 2.They were playing soccer at 3 PM yesterday. 3.She was cooking dinner while he was setting the table. 4.We were watching a movie when the power went out. 5.He was studying for his exams all night.

Past Perfect Tense – used to represent an event or action that happened in the past before another event or action that happened in the past EXAMPLES 1 .She had finished her homework before she went out to play. 2. By the time he arrived, they had already started the meeting. 3. They had never seen such a beautiful sunset before their trip to Hawaii. 4. I had just sat down to eat when the doorbell rang. 5. We had visited the museum twice before it closed for renovations .

Past Perfect Continuous Tense – used to denote an action or event that was taking place in the past until another action or event happened in the past. EXAMPLES 1.She had been studying for hours before she finally took a break. 2.They had been living in that house for ten years before they moved. 3.He had been working at the company for five years when he got promoted. 4.I had been waiting for over an hour when the bus finally arrived. 5.We had been walking for miles before we realized we were lost.

FUTURE TENSE it tells us about the actions that are going to take place in the future EXAMPLES 1.I will visit my grandparents next weekend. 2.She will start her new job on Monday. 3.They will travel to Japan next year. 4.I am going to meet my friend later today. 5.He is going to buy a new car soon. 6.We are going to have a party next Friday

Types of future tense Simple Future Tense – used to denote an action that will happen in the future. EXAMPLES 1.I will call you when I get home. 2.She will help you with your homework. 3.They will arrive at the airport at 8 PM. 4.We will go to the beach tomorrow. 5.He will start his new job next Monday. 6.The weather will improve by the weekend

Future Continuous Tense – used to indicate an action that will be taking place in the future. EXAMPLES I will be traveling to Italy this time next week. She will be working on her thesis all weekend. They will be playing soccer at 3 PM tomorrow. We will be having dinner with friends tonight. He will be studying for his exams during the holidays. I will be waiting for you at the station at 6 PM. She will be giving a presentation at the conference next month.

Future Perfect Tense – used to represent an action that starts in the present and will happen in the future. EXAMPLES 1.By this time next year, I will have graduated from college. 2.She will have finished her project by the deadline. 3.They will have moved to their new house by the end of the month. 4.We will have completed the report before the meeting starts. 5.He will have learned how to play the guitar by the time the concert happens. 6.By 10 PM, I will have cooked dinner and cleaned the kitchen.

Future Perfect Continuous Tense – used to depict an action that is happening in the present and will complete at some point in the future . EXAMPLES 1.He will have been playing the piano for two hours by the time the guests arrive. 2.By the end of the day, I will have been waiting for over three hours. 3.She will have been practicing for the competition for six months by the time it starts. 4.They will have been building the new bridge for two years by its completion date. 5.He will have been jogging every morning for a month by the end of this week.
