STRUCTURE AND USE
PRESENT SIMPLE:
affirmative
I / you / we / they work(= infinitive)
He / She / it works(infinitive + -s)
•The third person singular adds –s to the infinitive.
•When the infinitive ends with a, i, o, u, -s, -sh,
-ch, and -x, we add –es.

third person ends with –ies.

•With the present simple we can use a frequency
adverb that is placed before the verb.

•We can also use other frequency expressions
such as:
every + noun ( every year, every day...)
once a ... ( once a week)
twice a... (twice a month)
three, four ... times a (six times a year)
We have a shower every day.
He goes swimming twice a week.

•I / you / we / they do not / don’t + infinitive
•He / she / it does not / doesn’t + infinitive
I don’t drink coffee We don’t work
You don’t do judo You don’t live here
He doesn’t study They don’t like it
She doesn’t speak French
It doesn’t finish at eight
PRESENT SIMPLE: questions
(question w.)+ do / does + subject + infinitive …?
(where) do I / you / we / they work ?
(when) does he / she / it start ?
We also use do / don’t / does / doesn’t in
short answers.

Do they always go by car? Yes, they always do.
PRESENT SIMPLE: use
•We use the present simple for:
A Facts that are true in general.
The Earth goes round the Sun.
I like big cities.
We do a lot of different things in our free time.
B Habits, routines and timetables.
The shops open at 9.30 and close at 8.
He has breakfast at home.
The train leaves at 4 o’clock.
