Chankya Kotaliya was born in a Brahmin family in 350 BCE and was educated at Taxila University. Chankya was a very extraordinary intelligent guy. To begin his career, he moved to the Pataliputra, the capital of the Nanda's empire, where he was hired as a courtly advisor by King Dhanananda .
But King Dhanananda was a ruthless and corrupt ruler and was not a legitimate descendant of the Nanda dynasty because his father seized power through a coup.
So at some point, King Dhananda , who was of an abusive nature, insulted Chankya a lot and removed him from his post. Upon which Chankya took an oath that he would eradicate the Nanda dynasty from the roots.
Then after this, Chankya met a kid who was a legitimate descendant of the Nanda dynasty and his name was Chandragupta. Changkiya then took the child to Taxila, where he polished him into a kingly figure and formed an alliance to topple the Nanda dynasty .
According to various resources, Chankya obtained war loans and used it to create a Greek mercenaries force and attacked Patliputra . The first attempt was unsuccessful, but Chankya then realized that he should secure favorable positions in the surroundings first. With this new strategy, Chankya attacked again, which was successful.
After the collapse of the Nanda Empire, Chandragupta established the Mauryan Empire, in which Chankya was the Prime Minister. With the guidance of Chankya, this empire changed into the largest native empire in Indian history.
First, he developed a strong central administration, which was different from the previous fragmented kingdoms. Parallel government structures were developed, which helped out the state administration. We can say, first concept of centralization, in structured form, we got from Chankya.
Chankya then also believed in the power of economic competition. For example, Chankya monopolized weapons manufacturing centers and also allowed private mining operators to compete with each other in the supply chain.
Arthashastra has been written in an advisory writing style for kings to rule effectively. Arthashastra has been divided into 15 books, and 150+ government-related topics have been discussed, from taxation to espionage and resource politics.
Six Folded Policy 1. Sandhi ( P eace treaty) In this, Chankya suggests that if the enemy is stronger, and you need time to prepare yourself, then you should do the peace treaty, which you can break after getting prepared. 2. Vigraha ( Declaring war) In this, Chankya suggests that when you need to expand your territory, and at that time your enemy is also weak, then you can avail that advantage and attack him. 3.Asana (Neutrality) In this, Chankya says that when two powerful kingdoms are fighting, a smart ruler is the one who does not take anyone's side, but carefully watches the war and then makes alliances with the victorious kingdom. 4. YANA( Strategic Preparation): which means Strategic Preparation. In this, Chankya suggests that when war becomes inevitable and you need time to strengthen your army and resources, then this tactic should be used. For example, in the case of 1971 war, training Mukti Bani was the objective of Indian foreign policy so that Pakistan could not take strategic advantage from the east wing.
5. Samsriya ( Seeking Protection) In this, Chankya suggests that when your kingdom is very weak and your existence is threatened, then you should make an alliance with a strong kingdom. 6. (Dual policy) In this, Chankya says that when your kingdom is surrounded by multiple enemies and you are in danger of multiple wars, then you use this strategy in which you make the enemy pretend to be friendly but secretly prepare yourself for war..
