Poetic devices The Sound of Poetry

What is Poetic Devices? →Poetic devices are tools that a poet can use to create rhythm, enhance a poem’s meaning, or intensify a mood or feeling. These devices help piece the poem together, much like a hammer and nails join planks of wood together. Some of these devices are used in literature as well, but for the sake of clarity, we Will look at all of these de- Vices through the lens of Poetry

It’s Types : →Alliteration →Metaphor →Personification →Simile →Onomatopoeia →Repetition →Oxymoron →Hyperbola →Rhyme →Imagery →Apostrophe →Irony

Alliteration →Alliteration is a literary device that uses similar phonetic sounds in continuity to make an effect. This device is usually used to decorate the words with a musical, lyrical or emotional effect →By Oxford Learner’s Dictionary— “the use of the same letter or sound at the beginning of words that are close together.” Examples – September Sunlight – Alert abrupt – Stood still to simle – Terribly transient feet

METAPHOR →A figure of speech in which a word or phrase literally denoting one kind of object or idea is used in place of another to suggest a likeness or analogy between them Example– Machine starts up of chitterings . – It is the engine of her family. – The laburnum subsides to empty. – I am poem of earth. – Night owl. – She is an early bird.

Personification →Personification is a figure of speech that is used to attribute human characteristics to something that is not human. It can also be used to personify an abstract quality. Examples– Its silence silences. – The sun smiled down on us. – The story jumped off the page.

Simile →A simile is a figure of speech that is mainly used to compare two or more things that possess a similar quality. It uses words such as ‘like’ or ‘as’ to make the comparison. Examples:– Sleek as a lizard. – As slow As a sloth. – Moves like a snail.

Onomatopoeia →An onomatopoeia is the forming of a word by imitating the sound the word is referring to, as in bang, meaning “a loud, explosive sound,” and meow, meaning “the sound a cat makes.” The words themselves are also known as Onomatopo - - eia . Examples:– The dog barked all night. – The sausages are sizziling in the pan. – The pig squealed.

Repetition → Repetition is an instance where a word or phrase is repeated to provide clarity and emphasis, highlighting deeper meanings in the text. Examples:– Get ready;Get set; go. – Boys will be boys. – All for one and one for all.

Oxymoron →An oxymoron is a rhetorical device that uses two opposite or contradictory terms one after the other in order to project an effect. According to the Oxford Learner’s Dictionary, oxymoron is defined as “a phrase that combines two words”. Examples:– Parting is such sweet sorrow.” – O heavy lightness! Serious vanity!.

Hyperbola → Hyperbole is a rhetorical and literary technique where an author or speaker intentionally uses exaggeration and overstatement for emphasis and effect. Examples:– I’m dying of thirst. – I love u too the moon . – My feet are killing me.

Rhyme → A rhyme is a repetition of similar sounds (usually, the exact same phonemes) in the final stressed syllables and any following syllables of two or more words. Most often, this kind of perfect rhyming is consciously used for a musical or aesthetic effect in the final position of lines within poems or songs. Examples:– To cool for school. – Shop till you drop.

Imagery →Imagery is language used by poets, novelists and other writers to create images in the mind of the reader. Imagery includes figurative and metaphorical language to improve the reader’s experience through their senses. Examples:– The kitten’s fur is milky. – His coat felt like a velvet curtain.

Apostrophe → Apostrophe is a figure of speech that is used to address someone who is absent or already dead. It can also be used to address an abstract quality or idea, and even a non-living object. Examples:– “O Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo?” – “I’m sorry, Wilson. Wilson, I’m sorry!”

Irony → As a literary device, irony implies a distance between what is said and what is meant. Based on the context, the reader is able to see the implied meaning in spite of the contradiction. Examples:– A fire station burns down. – The Police station get robbed.

Conclusion → All of these poetic devices are commonly used in poetry and help to add expression to each poem . As you read through poem see if you can identify these poetic devices
