The Living World : Adaptations and Classification  Exercise 1 : Question 4

Read each of the following statements. Write a paragraph about adaptation with reference to each statement.  (a) There is extreme heat in deserts. Desert plants are leafless or have tiny, thorn-like leaves to save water. Their thick, green stems store water and food, and can perform photosynthesis. They have deep roots to find water, and a waxy coating to prevent water loss. Desert animals also have special features to survive. They have thick skin to keep water in, long legs with cushioned soles for walking on hot sand, and nostrils and long eyelashes to keep out sand. Animals like rats, snakes, spiders, and lizards stay in cool burrows during the day and come out at night when it's cooler.

b)  Grasslands are lush green Grasslands have various bushes and grasses with strong roots that prevent soil erosion. In equatorial forests, animals like tigers, elephants, and deer can hide easily. In cold regions, short grasses provide habitats for animals like rabbits. Meadows are found in hilly areas as well as plains.

c) Insects are found in large numbers.  Insects are abundant because they have special adaptations to survive tough environments. They can survive in places like deserts and Antarctica. For example, grasshoppers can jump far with their strong legs, houseflies have spongy mouths for eating, and bugs like stink bugs blend in with their surroundings. These adaptations help insects survive in different conditions around the world.

d) We hide.  Animals use different ways to hide and stay safe. Chameleons change their colors to blend (camouflage) in with their surroundings. Rabbits hide in burrows to avoid predators and harsh weather.  Predators like tigers and leopards have coats with stripes or spots that help them hide in forests while they hunt

e)  We have long ears. Many animals, like rabbits and deer, have long ears that help them hear distant sounds that could warn them of predators nearby. For rabbits, their long ears also help in staying cool by releasing heat from their bodies. Similarly, elephants use their large ears to both hear well and cool down—they flap their ears to circulate air and lower their body temperature. Having long ears is important for these animals to stay safe and comfortable in their habitats.
