2. INTRODUCTION Latin name – Gloriosa superba Family – Liliaceae Sanskrit Name – Agnishikha , Garbhnut English name – Malabar Glory, Glory lily Hindi name – Kaliyaari , Laangli Type of Poison . As per Ayurveda – Sthaavar Vanaspatik Visha As per Modern science – Irritant Vegetable Poison

3. TOXIC PART All parts of the plant are toxic but Root is the most . The root is generally tuberous with V shape.

4. RAS PANCHAK Guna – Laghu , Teekshana Rasa – Katu , Tikta Veerya – Ushna Vipaka – Katu Prabhav - Garbhpaatan

MODE OF ACTION AS PER AYURVEDA उष्णवीर्य , कटु विपाक और रस के आधिक्य से पित्त विकृति होती है , जिस से अन्नवह स्रोतस और स्पर्श स्थान पर शोफ एवं पाक उत्पत्ति होती है । गर्भपातकर प्रभाव की वजह से गर्भाशय संकोच कर गर्भपात होता है । • AS PER MODERN SCIENCE IT CAUSES IRRITATION AND INFLAMMATION TO MUCUS MEMBRANE OF GIT. INFLAMMATION IN GENITO REPRODUCTIVE TRACT CAUSES ABORTION

6. DOSAGE Therapeutic dosage – 250-500 gm . 3 – 6 gm ( Abortion ) Fatal Dose – Cholchicine 60mg in adult Fatal Period – 12-72 hours

CLINICAL FEATURES AFTER INGESTION OF POISON Burning sensation of mouth, throat, chest and upper abdomen Nausea and intense vomiting Entire abdomen cramps and pain Bloody purgation Excessive thirst, oliguria Loss of consciousness and convulsions COMPLICATIONS multi organ failure with coagulathy Renal failure and polynuropathy and respiratory distress

8. CLINICAL FEATURES AFTER INSERTION IN VAGINA Lower abdominal pain especially in hypogastric region Vaginal bleeding Complete or incomplete abortion Inflammation of vagina Feeble and weak pulse Septicemic shock in case of incomplete abortion

9. MANAGEMENT OF INGESTED GLORIOSA POISONING Resuscitation ( Sanjeevan Chikitsa ) is given as per need. In case of unabsorbed poison If the patient is conscious and have stable vitals , Yashtimadhu faant or salted water is used for vamana and if the patient is unconscious and have unstable vitals, stomach wash is done with KMnO4 solution. • In case of absorbed poison, Treatment is not indicated. • Godugdha or Goghrit can be used as mechanical antidote. Shunthi is used as specific antidote. • Symptomatic Treatment In case of burning, Dhanyak Hima can be given In case of colic pain,Colicarmin syrup can be given.

10. MANAGEMENT OF ABORTION BY GLORY Removal of Gloriosa along with the root Yoni dhawan and Yoni pichu Rakt stambhak and Uterine tonic can be given like Ashok Arishta Manjishthaadi Kwath can be given for Rakt prasaadan .

11. POST MORTEM APPEARANCE EXTERNAL In case of ingestion, Subconjuctival and petechial hemorrhage over chest and abdomen In case of criminal abortion, Paleness, Clothes with blood stain and aborted material , Genital Injury. INTERNAL In case of ingestion, Inflammation of stomach wall with punctuate hemorrhagic over posterior wall and lesser curvature , Petechial hemorrhage over epicardial surface of heart, lower lobes of lungs and white matter cerebral Hemispheres. In case of criminal abortion, vaginal cervical injury,clotted blood in vagina , inflammation of vagina, cervix , uterus and other organs like liver, spleen are pallor.

12. MEDICO LEGAL ASPECT ACCIDENTAL – Generally not found due to unavailability of plants or Kalp . SUICIDAL – Generally not found HOMICIDAL – Generally not found CRIMINAL ABORTION – Gloriosa roots are utilized usually for criminal abortions in rural and undeveloped areas.
