Introduction The success of any system of education depends to a large extent on the quality of the teachers and their commitment to duty and their effectiveness on the job . In this presentation, the concept of teaching profession, teachers professional codes of conduct and qualities of a Vocational teacher will be discussed.

TEACHING PROFESSION The term ' Profession ' stands for an occupation that requires specialized study and training before one is allowed to practice or work. If one considers teaching as a profession then; Must be willing to go through a long period of preparation. Strive for excellence. Commit yourself to moral, ethical values and dedicate yourself to service.

TEACHING PROFESSION Teaching is the special career as it gives rise to other profession since one can not acquire knowledge and specific filed skills without a teacher. A Professional teacher is the person who have the skills, knowledge, and experience to facilitates students to develop competencies (knowledge, skills and attitude) in specific occupation.

THE TEACHING PROFESSION CODES AND CHARACTER Whoever adopts teaching as a profession assumes the obligation to conduct him/herself in accordance with the ideals of the profession.” Teacher’s professional codes are set of rules and principles that guide teachers in their teaching profession. It constitutes the accepted values, norms or standards to be adhered to by all professional teachers.

THE TEACHING PROFESSION CODES AND CHARACTER Moral and ethical behavior among teachers is central to their work and their relationship with leaners and society at large. In this regard, teachers shall behave and conduct themselves as stipulated under the Public Service Code of Ethics and Conduct . Indeed, teachers in the service shall uphold professional conduct as public servant.

Teachers’ Professional Codes of conduct Perform diligently and in a disciplined manner;  Promote team work;  Pursue excellence in service;  Promote transparency and accountability; Discharge duties with integrity, and honest.

Examples of unethical conducts Absenteeism Alcoholism Corruption Improper dressing Theft Examination fraud, Mismanagement of time and Sexual abuse

Roles of a Vocational Teacher 1. To prepare schemes of training and instructional plans

Roles of a Vocational Teacher 2. To effectively and efficiently deliver instructions to trainees through lectures, demonstrations, discussions to impact knowledge skill and attitude in order to produce trainees with the required competencies .

Roles of a Vocational Teacher 3. To perform formative and summative assessments by preparing and using assessment tools such as oral, written, product assessment and records in Log books in order to evaluate their level of competences .

Roles of a Vocational Teacher 4. To provide counselling to trainees through physical discussion and advising in order to give direction and guidance for their better life .

Roles of a Vocational Teacher 5. To safeguard the use of training tools and equipment by performing daily preventive and corrective maintenance such as cleaning, lubricating, fault checking and doing minor repairing to maintain their life span .

Roles of a Vocational Teacher 6. To participate in curriculum development .

Roles of a Vocational Teacher 7. To prepare daily, weekly, monthly, terminal and annual implementation and progress reports by compiling trainee’s assessment forms in order to evaluate training status . 8. To monitor discipline of trainees by following rules and regulations stipulated in their joining instruction .

Areas of Competencies for a Vocational Teacher Educational psychology; Curriculum interpretation skills; Facilitation skills; Effective Communication skills and Managerial Skills
