Clinical features of GBS

Clinical Manifestations Classic clinical features include areflexia and ascending weakness Muscle weakness and areflexia or hyporeflexia of the lower extremities Hyporeflexia and weakness leading to quadriplegia Involvement of diaphragm and intercostal muscles leading to neuromuscular respiratory failure

Clinical Manifestations Sensory symptoms include Paresthesia of the hands and feet Pain

Clinical Manifestations Optic nerve leading to blindness Glossopharyngeal leading to bulbar muscle weakness Vagus nerve affecting swallowing or clearing of secretions Vagus nerve demyelination results in cardiovascular system instability (tachycardia, bradycardia, hypertension, orthostatic hypotension) Does not affect cognitive function or level of consciousness

Criteria for diagnosis- Clinical Progressive weakness in leg & arm & areflexia Features that strongly support diagnosis are progression of symptoms over days to 4 week relatively symmetry symptoms mild sensory symptoms /signs mild cranial nerve involvement
