About This Presentation

A phytosome is a complex of a natural active ingredient and a phospholipid - mostly lecithin. It is claimed that phytosome increases absorption of "conventional herbal extracts" or isolated active principles both topically as well as orally.

PHYTOSOME Name – Tanaya Palit Degree – B.Pharm , M.Pharm Designation – Assistant Professor

CONTENT Definition Advantages Difference between liposeome and phytosome Preparation Chemical and physical properties. Formulation Novel approaches for delivery Application of phytosome Conclusion Thank you

Phytosome Phytosomes are novel drug delivery system containing hydrophilic bioactive phytoconstituent of herbs surround and bound by phospholipids. The term “phyto” means plant while “some” means cell-like. Phytosomes are little cell like structure.

Advantages Enhanced absorption of herbal constituent. Better bioavailability Reduced dose Better stability profile Nutritional benefit Entrapment efficiency is high Enhanced permeation through skin

Difference between liposome and phytosomes Liposome Phytosome Here no biological bond is formed the phosphatidylcholine molecules surround the water soluble substances. Phytosomes involves chemical bonds. Bioavailavility of liposomes is less than phytosomes . Phytosomes are much better absorbed than liposomes showing better bioavailability

Preparation

Chemical and Physical Properties Phytosomes are lipophilic substances with definite melting point. Freely soluble in non-polar solvents and aprotic solvents. moderately soluble in fats. Insoluble in water. When treated with water, phytosomes assumes a micelles shape forming liposomal-like structures.

Formulation of Phytosome Can be formulated both – 1) orally 2)topically Tablet formation with Phytosome complex Hard gelatin capsule formation With Phytosomes complex Soft gelatin capsule Formation with phytosomes complex

NOVEL APPROACHES FOR DELIVERY Phytosome newly introduced patented technology developed to incorporate standardized plant extracts or water soluble phytoconstituents into phospholipids to produce lipid compatible molecular complexes they are also known as Herbosome and delivered drugs at the targeted area like liposome at it contains phospholipid.

Application of Phytosome Silymarin Phytosome Yanyu et al. prepared the silymarin phytosome and studied the pharmacokinetics in rats. Most of the phytosomes are focused to Silybum marianum which contains premier liver- protectant flavonoids. The fruit of milk thistle plant contains flavonoids known for hepato -protective effects. Silyamarin has been to show to have positive effects in treating liver disease of various kinds like hepatitis, cirrhosis, inflammation of bile duct. Phytosomes of grape seed Grape seed phytosomes is composed of oligomeric polyphenols of varying molecular size complexed with phospholipids. The main properties of procyanidin flavonoids of grape seed are in increase in total antioxidant capacity and stimulation of physiological defenses of plasma.

Application of Phytosome Phytosomes of green tea Green tea leaves is characterized by presence of polyphenolic compound epigallocatechin 3-o-gallate as the key component. These compounds are3 potent modulators of several biochemical process linked to the breakdown of homeostatis in major chronic-degenerative disease such as cancer and arthrosclerosis. Maiti et al. developed the phytosomes ofcurcumin ( flavonoid from turmeric, Curcuma longa linn ) and naringenin ( flavonoid from grape, Vitis vinifera ). phytosome of naringenin produced better antioxidant activity than the free compound with a prolonged duration of action. Phytosomes of curcumin Maiti et al. developed the quercetinphospholipid phytosomal complex by a simple and reproducible method and also showedthat the formulation exerted better therapeutic efficacy as compared to the non- phytosomalconventional preparation in rat liver injury induced by carbon tetrachloride Quercetin-phospholipid phytosomal complex

Conclusion The phytosomes is novel dosage from and which is used for the preparations of final product like tablet, capsule, gel, suspension. Phytosomes is used to increase the solubility as well as permeability of the phytoconstituents present in part of the plant.
