Manual Transmission MUHAMMED   BILAL                     REG NO:-2201022306 S5 ME 1

Definition 1 .Also known as a manual gearbox, a standard transmission or stick shift  2. Uses a driver-operated clutch, usually engaged and disengaged by a foot pedal/hand lever 3. Regulating torque transfer from the engine to the transmission .

At Low speed

At High speed Les

Sample layout  Manipulating a lever called a  gear stick ,  shift stick ,  gearshift ,  gear lever ,  gear selector , or  shifter   4 speed transmission sample layout   N  marks  neutral, R marks reverse  Entire horizontal line is a neutral position

Market application 56% market share Typically four to six forward gear ratios and one reverse gear used Consumer – 2 to 7 Heavy equipment--8 to 25

Types of Manual Transmission Sliding Mesh Gearbox Constant Mesh Gearbox Synchromesh Gearbox

Sliding Mesh Consists of various sets of gears and shafts arranged together in organized fashion  Shifting or meshing of different gear ratios is done by sliding of gears right and left  Speed increased to high speed ratios Reverse of the car made possible

Constant mesh gearbox Constantly meshed pairs of gears and shifting devices - dog clutches  introduced Constant meshing of these gears can cause breakage to the gear teeth Shifting of gears is a very noisy process

Synchromesh Gearbox  Latest version of Constant mesh type Synchronizer - main part of this gearbox that stabilizes the speed This synchronizer consists two parts, Synchro cone and Baulk ring   While engaging, ring will gradually slide into the cone and the friction will slow or speeds up the gear wheel

SYNCHRONIZER

Benefits of Manual transmission Fuel Economy – 5% to 15 % depending on drivinfg conditions Longetivity- Require less maintenance and are easier as well as cheaper to repair Cost- Price of  vehcile with manual transmission tends to be lower than automatic transmission Lubrication- Uses splash lubrication system

Drawbacks Complexity and learning curve Ease of use Shifting speed Stopping on hil ls
