About This Presentation

Biometrics refers to the use of unique physical or behavioral characteristics to identify individuals. This presentation covers various types of biometric systems, such as fingerprint, facial, iris, and voice recognition, and their applications in security, healthcare, finance, and more.

1 Department of Computer Engineering 2nd Year 3 rd Semester Session 2019-20 Seminar On : BIOMETRICS Guided By Prof. A. A. KOLPYAKWAR Presented By Mr. SWARUP G. THAMKE DATE : SEPTEMBER 04, 2019

BIOMETRICS

WHAT IS BIOMETRICS ? A popular technique for user identification. Categoried into two categories : 1) Physiological 2) Behavioral

ROLE OF BIOMETRICS : Increased security. Decrease in frauds. Elimination of typical problems & misuse. Eliminates trouble releated to remembering hard passwords. Low cost and can produce timely results. Helps in maintaining details of users. Links users authentically.

BASIC STRUCTURE OF BIOMETRICS :

FINGERPRINTS : Every human being has a unique hand & unique fingers. It wont change after particular age. Fingerprint of one person does not matches with other. A fingerprint pattern is made up of ridges and furrows present on surface of the fingertip.

STRUCTURE OF FINGERPRINTS AUTHENTICATION : Automated fingerprint recognition & matching system find out number of features of fingerprints and stores it in the form of numbers for further comparision or authentication.

ADVANTAGES & DISADVANTAGES OF FINGERPRINT AUTHENTICATION : 9 ADVANTAGES : 1. High accuracy level. 2. Well developed system. 3. Easy to use. 4. Needs very small data storage to store patterns. 5. Standardized. DISADVANTAGES : 1. For some people it is very intrusive, as it is used for identification of the criminals. 2. Cant work perfect if fingers are dirty, dry or even changes from aging. 3. Images capture at 500 dpi only (dots per inch).

HANDPRINTS : Used for identification of features releated to hand link shape, lengths, width, etc. of fingers. Can be used at R & D departments, military departments, govt. offices and many other places. It recognizes shape of hands along with different dimensions and compares with the one stored in the database.

Hand geometry devices are in market since 1980. A first biometric used wide. Scanners used for reading the handprints.

ADVANTAGES & DISADVANTAGES OF HANDPRINT AUTHENTICATION : 12 ADVANTAGES : 1. H/W can be easily integrated with other systems. 2. Commonly accepted by people. 3. Data is numerical & small in amout . DISADVANTAGES : 1. Expensive technology. 2. Size is large. 3. Not good for person who have arthritis.

RETINA PATTERNS : It is an important part of the eye & this method is not very common. Costs very high. Vessels carrying blood present at back of human eye are checked or examined. There is a specific pattern under retinal surface which is unique for authentication of an individual.

STRUCTURE OF RETINAL AUTHENTICATION :

ADVANTAGES & DISADVANTAGES OF RETINAL AUTHENTICATION : 15 ADVANTAGES : 1. High accuracy. 2. Replication is difficult. 3. Dead person’s eye deteriorates very fast, so no need to check if human is alive or not. DISADVANTAGES : 1. Intrusive. 2. While using a consumer may think that is is harmful for eyes. 3. Takes time for comparison. 4. Very expensive technique.

VOICE/SPEECH PATTERNS : A numerical representation of sound, pattern & rhythm of individual’s voice. Also known as “voice print”. Also it is unique to individual like a hand print. Every human voice have differnet characteristics releated to sound waves.

STRUCTURE OF VOICE/SPEECH PATTERNS :

ADVANTAGES & DISADVANTAGES OF VOICE AUTHENTICATION : 18 ADVANTAGES : 1. Non intrusive. 2. Social acceptability. 3. Verification time is about five seconds. 4. Cheap technology. DISADVANTAGES : 1. Recorded voice can be used in unauthorized ways. 2. Low accuracy. 3. Illness or change in voice may face difficulties.

SIGNATURE & WRITING PATTERN : 19 Every person have their own unique style of handwriting. This can be seen in signature of individual. A frequently written signature having same or exact pattern. But it complicates the task of identification or authentication.

STRUCTURE OF SIGNATURE PATTERNS :

ADVANTAGES & DISADVANTAGES OF SIGNATURE AUTHENTICATION : 21 ADVANTAGES : 1. Non intrusive. 2. Requires less time. 3. Cheap technology. DISADVANTAGES : 1. Difficult to identify pattern of an individual. 2. Error rate is more.

22 CONCLUSION : In short we can say that biometric authentication system is based on recognition of patterns releated to static or dynamic characteristics of human being. Though they are good, but they are not yet recognized as standard tool for security purpose. Their systems are complicated and expensive for data processing.
