Outline History of Electricity Generation in Bangladesh. Sources of Electricity in Bangladesh. Generation of Electricity in Bangladesh. Demand of Electricity Power. Statistics relative to demand and generation. Future Plans. 3
History of Electricity Generation and Distribution in Bangladesh Invention of electricity in Bangladesh stepping into distribution pre independence scenario of power generator post independence growth The history of Bangladesh Power Development Board(BPDB) Next Shuvo 4
Sources of Electric Energy in Bangladesh Non Commercial Sources of Energy Wood Fuel. Animal Waste. Crop residues Commercial Sources of Energy Natural Gas. Small residues of Oil and Coal. Renewable Energy. 5
Natural Gas 73% of the total power transmission in Bangladesh is covered by Natural Gas. As of 2021 , 81 natural gas wells are present in the 25 operational gas fields which produce over 2100 millions of cubic feet of gas per day (MMCFD) . Domestic natural gas production in Bangladesh 900 771TJ 6
Coal and Oil In 2023, Bangladesh produced a record 21 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity from coal. Bangladesh's total energy supply was 21.8% oil and 7% coal . Bangladesh's electricity generation in 2022-2023 was 9.87% coal-based, 28.11% liquid fuel-based 7
Other energy resources Bangladesh has 15 MW solar energy capacity through rural households and 1.9 MW wind power in kutubdia and Feni . Among renewable source there are: Petroleum Product Biogas Solar Bio-diesel Renewable Energy Next Arafat 8
Bangladesh Power Sector Source : https:// www.iea.org/countries/bangladesh Source: https:// energytracker.asia/the-electricity-sector-in-bangladesh-what-comes-next As of January 2023 Bangladesh's total installed power generation capacity was 26,700 MW 10,246 MW in the public sector 1,861 MW in joint ventures 10,215 MW in the private sector 1,160 MW imported from India. 9
Generation Capacity : 26,700 MW Present Demand : 16,000 MW Present Generation : 25,221 MW Highest Generation : 15,604 MW ( May 10, 2024 ) Per Capita Generation : 517.86 kWh Transmission line : 9,695 KM Distribution Line : 301,654KM Total consumers : 4.45 crore Access to Electricity : 98% Electricity Growth : 20 % (Since 2023) Bangladesh Power Sector Next Mahadi 10
Demand of Power In 2023, Bangladesh's power generation capacity increased by 20% to 30,711 MW, but the country still faced power shortages. In July 2023, the demand and supply gap was 7,739 MW T he gap increased again to 14,102 MW in September, resulting in increased load shedding in some areas . S hortages increased by almost 40% year-on-year to 2.7 billion kWh in 2023, which is 2.8% of demand . 11
Future Plans Bangladesh's Power System Master Plan (PSMP) aims to increase power generation capacity to 40,000 megawatts (MW) by 2030 and 60,000 MW by 2041. The government has also set goals to generate 15% of electricity from renewable sources by 2030, 40% by 2041, and 100% by 2050. The plan also includes generating 40% of electricity from clean energy by 2041. 13
