INTRODUCTION
Mental Health (MH) Definition by World Health Organisation
State of well-being
An individual realises his/her abilities
Can cope with normal stress
Can work productively
MH is more than mere absence of mental illnesses
Determinants of MH
Individual attributes e.g. ability to manage one’s thoughts, emotions
etc

Status of Mental Illnesses in India
In 2017, 19.73 crore people required care
4.57 crore people had depression disorders
2443 disability adjusted life years per 100000 population
21.1 suicides per 100000 population
Situation exacerbated due to COVID-19
Disruption of routines, education, recreation, social circles
People witnessed isolation, suffering, uncertainty, anger, fear
Mass unemployment & financial uncertainties
If left untreated, entire generation may end up having
depression, substance abuse etc
