Introductory Landscape Gardening (506)

Subject: Introductory Landscape Gardening (506) Topic: Imp of plant sizes in any landscape design Submitted to: Dr. Muhammad Ahsan Submitted by: Hamza Niaz Roll no E 033 Semester 6 th Department: Horticultural Sciences

CONTENTS Plant Size Basic Introduction 01 Tree Size Large, Medium & Small 02 Shrub Size 03 Tall, Medium & Low Importance of these terms in any design of landscaping

01 PLANT SIZE Size is one of the most visually significant characteristics of plant and should be studied early in the selection of plants for a design. Plant size directly affects the scale of a space, composition, interest and the overall framework of a design. Plant materials are categorized according to these described sizes.

Large Size Trees Large trees grow 12 m tall and above at maturity. This category of plant material is dominant visual element because of their height and mass. Examples of large trees include: Euclyptus camaldulensis Cedrala toona
Casuarina equisetifolia Pinus roxbunghii
Azardiracchta indica
Ficus bangalensis Ficus religiosa

Euclyptus camaldulensis Common Name: River Red Gum Trees Flowers

Cedrala toona Common Name: Red Cedar Tree Leave

Casuarina equisetifolia Common Name: Australian pine Tree Flowers

Pinus roxbunghii Common Name: Chir, Chil Tree Flowers

Azardiracchta indica Common Name: Neem Tree Flowers

Ficus bangalensis Common Name: Banyan Tree Tree Fruits

Ficus religiosa Common Name: Pipal Trees Flowers

Medium Size Trees Intermediate trees have a maximum height of 9-12 m. Examples include Ficus altissima
Acacia farnesiana Bauhinia veraigata
Delonix regia
Jacaranada mimosifolia Melia azedarach
Prosopis chilensis Based on the size, the most significant plants from both a compositional and spatial standpoint with the landscape are intermediate trees, because of their reasonable height and forms. Maximum utilization of plant material in the landscape is from this category of trees.

Ficus Altissima Common Name: Lofty fig Tree Fruit

Acacia farnesiana Common Name: Kikar/Babul Tree Flower

Bauhinia veraigata Common Name: Kachnar Tree Flower

Delonix regia Common Name: Gul-e-mohur Tree Flower

Jacaranada mimosifolia Common Name: Jacaranada Tree Flowers

Melia azedarach Common Name: Bakain Tree Flowers

Prosopis chilensis Common Name: Chilean mesquite Tree Flowers

Small Size Trees Moving down the scale of plant size, the trees grow to a maximum height of 6-8 m. Examples are Acer oblongum Callistemon lanceolatus Pongamia glabra Punica granatum Cassia javanica Ficus nitida Ficus retusa Salix babylonica Malus beccata

Acer oblongum Common Name: Himalayan Maple Tree Flowers

Callistemon lanceolatus Common Name: Bottle brush Tree Flowers

Pongamia glabra Common Name: Indian beech Tree Flowers

Punica granatum Common Name: Pomegranate Tree Flowers

Cassia javanica Common Name: Pink cassia Tree Flower

Ficus nitida Common Name: Indian laurel Tree Flowers

Ficus retusa Common Name: Retuse fig Tree Bonsai

Salix babylonica Common Name: Weeping willow Tree Inflorescence

Malus beccata Common Name: Siberian crabapple Tree Flowers

Tall Shrubs Plants that grow to a maximum height 4-6 m. In comparisons with small trees, tall shrubs are not only slightly shorter but also distinguished by the lack of a canopy. Typically, the banches of shrub extend to the ground when the small tree is located some distance above the ground, forming a canopy over an area. Tall shrubs may be used for screening, privacy and alongside the walks paths. Tall shrubs examples are Tecoma stans
Murrya exoteca
Thevitia merifolia Plumeria obtusa Magnolia grandiflora Cassia multijuga

Tecoma stans Common Name: Tecoma / Yellow bells Shrub Flower

Murraya exotica Common Name: Murva Shrub Flowers

Thevitia merifolia Common Name: Yellow oleander Shrub Flower

Plumeria obtusa Common Name: Gul-e-cheen/Firangi pani Shrub Flowers

Magnolia grandiflora Common Name: Bull bay/Magnolia Shrub Flower

Cassia multijuga Common Name: Multijuga Shrub Flower

Medium shurbs This category represents that plant materials b/w 2-4 m tall. They may also be any shape, color or texture. Again their branches usually extend to the ground or just slightly above it. Medium shrubs serve the same type of function as do low shrubs, but with slightly spatial containment. Medium shrubs may act as a visual transition in a composition b/w tall and low shrubs. Examples are Hibicus rosa sinensis Adenium obesum Cassia glauca Jatropha integrema

Hibiscus Rosa Sinensis Common Name: Shoe flower Shrub Diff. Flowers

Adenium obesum Common Name: Desert rose Shrub Flower

Cassia glauca Common Name: Cassia Shrub Flower

Jatropha integerrima Common Name: Jatropha Shrub Flowers

Low Shrubs These are next smaller plant category in the hierarchy of plant sizes. Low shrubs 1-2 m in height at maturity. Low shrubs can be used compositionally to connect other unrelated elements in the landscape and mix plantation with trees. Example are: Lantana Camara Carissa carandas Pilea peperomioides Rosa sps.

Lantana Camara Common Name: Lantana Shrub Flowers

Carissa carandas Common Name: Karanda Shrub Flowers

Pilea peperomioides Common Name: Chinese money plant Shurb Inflorescence

Rosa indica Common Name: Gulab Shrub Flower
