About This Presentation

A vaginal examination (VE) is an extremely intimate examination which is performed regularly and accepted as a routine procedure by midwives during labour. 1,2 A VE can be performed digitally, or by using instruments such as a speculum.

INTRODUCTION
A vaginal examination is an essential part of midwifery
care, and is routinely performed when assessing the
progress of labour.

DEFINITION
A vaginal examination in labour is a systematic
examination to assess the status of vagina, vulva,
cervix, membranes, presenting part of pelvis.

PURPOSE
To assess the progress and delay of labour.
To assess the condition of the vulva, vagina, and cervix.
If you are experiencing gynecological symptoms such
sa pelvic pain, unusual vaginal discharge or urinary
problems.

INDICATION
To check the health of the reproductive organs and
diagnose any problem.
To cheak for vaginal infection or STD (Sexually
transmitted disease.
Determine pregnancy or miscarriage.
Screen for cervical cancer, which can be treated and
cured if found early.

DIGITAL VAGINAL
EXAMINATION
In the digital vaginal examination we will insert two
lubricated, gloved finger into vagina with one hand
while the outside of your lower abdominal.
During this part of the exam, we will check the size and
shape of your uterus and ovaries, noting any tender
areas or unusual growths.

SPECULUM VAGINAL
EXAMINATION
In the speculum vaginal examination, a device called a
speculum will be inserted into the vagina.
The speculum is opend to widen the vagina so that the
vagina and cervix can seen.Perform a Pap smear(we
will use a plastic spatula and small brush to take a
sample of cells from the cervix).

exam, we will check the size and shape of your uterus
and ovaries, noting any tender area or unusual
growths.

CONCLUSION
Vginal examination may need to be performed in a
number of different clinical scenarios including
unexplained pelvic pain, irregular vaginal bleeding,
abnormal vaginal discharge and as part of the
assessment of a pelvic mass.
