“To value means to prize, to esteem, but secondarily it means to apprise, to estimate, it means act of cherishing something, holding it dear an act of passing judgment upon the nature and amount of passing judgment.” John Dewey (1948)
Development of Values The development of values is a complex and ongoing process that occurs throughout an individual's life. It is influenced by various factors, including cultural background, family upbringing, education, personal experiences, and societal influences.
Development of Values Family Culture Peer Influence The family is often the primary source of early values. Children learn by observing the behavior of their parents, caregivers, and other family members. Family traditions, customs, and rituals contribute significantly to the formation of values. Cultural values, norms, and beliefs are transmitted to individuals through their cultural environment. This includes language, religious practices, and societal expectations. Cultural values provide a framework for understanding right and wrong, shaping an individual's moral compass. As individuals grow older, peers become increasingly influential. Peer groups contribute to the development of values by shaping attitudes, behaviors, and preferences. Conformity to peer norms and the desire for acceptance can impact the values an individual adopts.
Educational Institutions Personal Experiences Media and Technology Schools and educational institutions play a crucial role in value development. Formal education introduces individuals to a variety of subjects, ethical considerations, and societal expectations. Teachers, textbooks, and the overall school environment contribute to shaping values. Personal crises or moments of reflection can prompt individuals to reevaluate their values. These moments may lead to a reassessment of priorities, beliefs, and ethical principles. Media, including television, movies, the internet, and social media, can impact values by presenting certain behaviors as acceptable or desirable. Media can shape perceptions of beauty, success, and societal norms. Development of Values
Values are the guiding principles that shape our beliefs, decisions, and actions, and they are inherently personal. The process of developing and refining our values is a dynamic and lifelong journey that reflects the everchanging landscape of our experiences and perspectives. Life experiences serve as both catalysts and mirrors in this ongoing process. Positive experiences may reaffirm existing values, while challenges and setbacks can prompt introspection, leading to a reconsideration of what truly matters. Each triumph and tribulation becomes a lesson, contributing to the mosaic of our evolving values. A Lifelong Process
