4. What are Search Engines? A search engine is a sophisticated piece of software, accessed through a page on a website that allows you to search the web by entering search queries into a search box. The search engine allows one to ask for content meeting specific criteria and retrieving a list of references that match those criteria. Search engines use regularly updated indexes to operate quickly and efficiently.

Searching Techniques Proximity Searching Ability to specify how close within a record multiple terms should be to each other Phrase Searching Requires terms to be in the exact order specified within the phrase markings. The default standard for identifying phrases is to use double quotes (" ") to surround the phrase.
