DRY FLOWERS Flowers near to natural, preserved and processed, having beauty as well as an everlasting value. They are extra special as they can be kept and cherished for years together. Dried flowers can be cherished throughout the year for any occasion. Dry flowers are put to many novel and varied uses such as bouquets, flower arrangements, flower balls, cards, pot pourri etc.

ADVANTAGES OF DRYING FLOWERS OVER FRESH FLOWERS ➤LONG LASTING EFFECT ➤ AESTHETIC BEAUTY AND AVAILABLE THROUGHOUT THE YEAR ➤ SURVIVE HEAT OF SUMMER AND COLD IN WINTER ➤ MAINTAIN CELL STRUCTURE, PIGMENT LEVEL AND FLOWER SHAPE ➤ ENHANCING KEEPING QUALITY AND VALUE ADDITION TO FLOWERS ➤ CHEAPER ➤ EASILY AVAILABLE ➤ MINIMUM UPKEEP AND NOT EASILY PERISHABLE ➤ RANGE OF PRODUCTS FROM DRY FLOWERS ARE MORE ➤ REDUCING TRANSPORT COST

PRINCIPLES OF DRY FLOWER ARRANGEMENT 1. Selection of Suitable Plant Material: Choose flowers and foliage that retain their form, color, and texture after drying. Common choices include roses, lavender, statice , marigolds, eucalyptus, and ornamental grasses. Select materials that harmonize with each other in terms of size, texture, and color. 2. Balance: Ensure that the arrangement is balanced. In horticulture, balance may be symmetrical (both sides are mirror images) or asymmetrical (different elements create a balanced Visual weight).

For example, larger blooms should be balanced with smaller filler materials to create a cohesive look. 4. Rhythm and Movement: Create a rhythm in the arrangement by repeating certain elements, such as color or form, to guide the viewer’s eye throughout the design.

5. Focal Point: Establish a focal point in the arrangement where the eye naturally rests. This could be a large or uniquely shaped dried flower or a contrasting element that draws attention. 6. Texture: Use a variety of textures to add depth and interest. Mix smooth, rough, shiny, and matte surfaces to create a dynamic arrangement. PRINCIPLES OF DRY FLOWER ARRANGEMENT Cont.

7. Color Harmony: Choose a harmonious color palette. Consider complementary, analogous, or monochromatic schemes to achieve the desired effect. In horticulture, natural, earthy tones are often emphasized, though vibrant hues can also be striking. 8. Unity and Cohesion: Consistent Theme: Ensure that all elements of the arrangement work together to create a unified design. The choice of flowers, foliage, container, and any additional accessories should contribute to the overall theme. PRINCIPLES OF DRY FLOWER ARRANGEMENT Cont.

METHODS OF DRY FLOWERS ARRANGEMENT 1. Drying Techniques: Air Drying: Hang flowers upside down in a dark, dry, well-ventilated area. This is the most common method for drying flowers such as lavender, roses, and grasses. Pressing: Flatten flowers between sheets of paper or within a flower press. This method is ideal for creating two-dimensional arrangements or for use in crafts. Silica Gel Drying: Bury flowers in silica gel to preserve their three-dimensional form and vibrant color. This method is suitable for delicate flowers like roses and dahlias. Glycerin Preservation: Soak foliage in a solution of glycerin and water to retain flexibility and color. This method is commonly used for preserving leaves and branches.

2. Arranging Techniques: Creating a Framework: Begin by arranging the larger, more structural elements such as branches or large dried flowers. This framework provides support and sets the overall shape. Layering: Add layers of medium-sized and smaller flowers, grasses, or seed heads, gradually building the arrangement. Ensure that each layer adds to the depth and complexity of the design. Focal Point Placement: Position the focal elements—usually the most vibrant or uniquely shaped flowers—where they will draw attention, typically near the center or in a position of prominence. Fillers and Accents: Use smaller flowers, seed pods, or berries to fill in gaps and add accents. These elements help tie the arrangement together. METHODS OF DRY FLOWERS ARRANGEMENT CONT.

3. Mounting and Display: Choosing a Container: Select a container that complements the style of the arrangement. Containers in horticulture can range from simple terracotta pots to more ornate vases or baskets. Supporting the Arrangement: Use floral foam, wire, or other supports to secure the stems in place. In horticulture, natural supports like twigs or moss are also used to enhance the organic feel of the arrangement. Grouping: Consider grouping multiple small arrangements together to create a larger display or to highlight different aspects of the dried materials. METHODS OF DRY FLOWERS ARRANGEMENT CONT.

4. Maintenance: Longevity: Keep the arrangement in a dry, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight to prevent fading. Dusting: Gently dust the arrangement regularly using a soft brush or blower to maintain its appearance. Periodic Refreshing: Occasionally, some elements may need to be replaced as they deteriorate or lose their vibrancy over time. METHODS OF DRY FLOWERS ARRANGEMENT CONT.

CONCLUSION Dried flowers being cheap and everlasting are fast becoming a favorite among the adventurous flower lovers across the globe some what on the expense of fresh flowers. Liberalization of Exim policy (India New Foreign Trade Policy 2009 - 2014 also known as Indian New Exim Policy) in India has paved the way for increased export of floricultural products and the contribution of dried flowers is enormous. The organized research and production of dry flowers in the country by making use of rich bio-diversity and cheap labour would further trigger the growth of floriculture industry.
