WHAT IS ESTIMATING PROCESS ? Estimating is the process of looking into the future and trying to predict project cost and resource requirements. To minimize error a consistent procedure or set of steps for preparing an estimate is needed.

WHAT IS PROCESS BASED ESTIMATION ? The most common technique for estimating a project is to use process as base. Process is decomposed into a relatively small set of activities, actions , and tasks and the effort required for each is estimated. Process-based estimation begins with the delineation of software functions obtained from the project scope A series of framework activities must be performed for each function.

Process Based Estimation Steps: 1.Identify the Project Processes 2.Estimate the time requirement for each processes 3.Determine the resources required for each process 4. Estimate the cost of each process 5.Summarize the estimate

EXAMPLE : PROBLEM : A software package is to be developed for computer aided design application for mechanical components. FUNCTION USER INTEFACE AND CONTROL FACILITIES (UICF) TWO-DIMENSIONAL GEOMETRIC ANALYSIS (2DGA) THREE-DIMENSIONAL GEOMETRIC ANALYSIS (3DGA) DATABASE MANAGEMENT (DBM) COMPUTER GRAPHICS DISPLAY FACILITIES (CGDF) PERIPHERAL CONTROL FUNCTION (PCF) DESIGN ANALYSIS MODULES (DAM)

Estimates of effort (in person-months) for each software activity are provided for each CAD software function. The engineering and construction release activities are subdivided. Gross estimates of effort are provided for customer communication, planning, and risk analysis. Noted in the total row at the bottom of the table.

Horizontal and vertical totals indicate estimated effort required for analysis, design , code , and test. 53 percent of all effort is expended on front-end engineering tasks (analysis and design). Based on average hundred labor rate of ₹ 15000/month. Total estimated project cost is ₹690000/month. and the estimated effort is 46 person-months.
