Fenugreek Botanical name :  Trigonella foenum-graecum Family :   Fabaceae Specie : T. foenum –graecum Local Name :  Methi Basharat Abbas 2

History It is a native of West Asia and Mediterranean area. It was one of the spices used for embalming, and  the Greeks and Romans used it for cattle fodder (hence the Latin foenum graecum  meaning Greek hay). Basharat Abbas 3

Producing countries China, Korea, India, Spain, Afghanistan,  Pakistan, Argentina, The largest producer is India . Basharat Abbas 4

Botanical description Leaves : It has tri-foliate, obovate and toothed, light green leaves. Basharat Abbas 6

Stem : Stems are erect, long and tender. Basharat Abbas 7

Flower : Flowers are yellow-white, occurring singly or in pairs at the leaf axils. Basharat Abbas 8

Medicinal uses It has been used for brain, skin, liver and metabolic disorders. Highly beneficial for respiratory and digestive problems.  It is a highly powerful female herb, it helps in relaxing the uterus and releasing menstrual pains, and is an excellent stimulator of milk production in nursing mothers. Used in cases of weight loss. Use in different blood conditions, such as anemia, and nervous system disorders. Reduces fever lowers cholesterol level Good for the eyes. Used for allergies, coughs, colds, flu, swellings. Basharat Abbas 10

Production Technology Seedbed preparation Land should be ploughed 2-3 times, followed by planking to prepare fine seed bed. Soil clods should be broken and stubbles of previous crop should be removed. Basharat Abbas 11

Methods of sowing Two methods (1) Broadcast (2) line sowing Basharat Abbas 12

Sowing time & seed rate 15 October – 15 November Best time is 15 November. 10-15 kg of seeds per ha are required. Seeds should be soaked in water for 6 to 8 hours and dried in shade before sowing. Basharat Abbas 13

Spacing Row-to-Row is 30 cm Plant-to-Plant is 8-10 cm Basharat Abbas 14

Fertilizers & Manures 40 kg Nitrogen /ha 20 kg Phosphorous /ha  Half dose of Nitrogen and full dose of Phosphorous should be applied as basal dose and remaining 20 kg nitrogen after 30 days of sowing. 10-15 MT of F.Y.M. Basharat Abbas 15

Irrigation The first irrigation is given just after sowing. Subsequent irrigation are given at seven to ten days interval. 4-6 irrigations are required. Basharat Abbas 16

weeding 2 to 3 weeding are required to fenugreek crop. 1 st weeding should be done about 20-25 days after sowing.  Basharat Abbas 17

Harvesting Crop becomes ready for harvest in about 120-150 days. At the time of ripening, leaves and hulls become yellowish and leaves start falling. Timely harvesting is very important for this crop as late harvest leads to seed losses due to pod bursting, whereas in early harvest, the grains remain immature and small.  Basharat Abbas 18
