Let’s take a closer look at each of these tenets. Practitioner Leader/Decision-Maker Scientist Transferor REGISTERED NURSING PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE MODEL

Our registered nurses are guided by professional standards. The monitoring and measuring of nursing practice and outcomes are key responsibilities of an RN’s professional role. Practitioner REGISTERED NURSING PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE MODEL

Practitioner Professional registered nurses bring value to the varied aspects of our care delivery system. Our RNs practice in clinical, administrative, research, education, or other roles; each guided by the related professional standards. Examples of this professional tenet in action: Participating in the writing or revising of clinical practice policy, procedure, standards or guidelines Acting as a safety champion for patient specific outcomes Participating in practice governance at the local level and/or leading practice improvement initiatives as a member of a Practice Council REGISTERED NURSING PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE MODEL

Leader/Decision-Maker Our registered nurses are leaders working collaboratively with other professional disciplines, as well as self-directed decision-makers functioning with the authority to determine courses of action for their patients’ changing conditions. Registered nurses have leadership roles within our organization, making decisions about care delivery based on their foundation of nursing theory, science, and evidence. They play a crucial role in the oversight of practice quality, inter-professional collaboration, and resource management. Examples of this professional tenet in action: Takes a leadership role in professional organization Acts as a shift leader for nursing team Leads workshop or other educational forum at local level on inter-professional teamwork and the role of the RN Advocates for resources that enhance nursing practice, and/or measures impact of change to patient or nursing outcomes Leader/Decision-Maker REGISTERED NURSING PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE MODEL

Scientist Our registered nurses are scientists always in discovery and inquiry mode to develop new knowledge and to improve local quality through robust nursing research. REGISTERED NURSING PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE MODEL

Scientist The science of nursing is based upon a framework of critical thinking to evaluate and apply the most current evidence to improve outcomes. Examples of this professional tenet in action: Participating within an inter-professional team focused on translating evidence into practice at the unit and organizational level Leading initiatives to incorporate evidence-based practice into local improvements Acting as a quality or safety champion Participating in nursing research studies REGISTERED NURSING PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE MODEL

Transferor Our registered nurses’ commitment to caring includes continuous engagement in the “transmission and exchange of pertinent information that supports decisions required to manage the patient condition.” (O’Rourke, 2011) REGISTERED NURSING PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE MODEL

RNs possess a specialized body of knowledge which is integrated into every interaction with colleagues, patients and families, and the community. This exchange demonstrates the value of the professional nurse and the essential role of the RN in collaborative care. Examples of this professional tenet in action: Inter-professional communication such as initiating complex care rounds on behalf of the patient Acting as a preceptor or facilitator of in-service professional development offerings Developing patient educational materials Participating in activities that promote community health Transferor REGISTERED NURSING PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE MODEL
