About This Presentation

This profile is a broad outline on application and market scenario on PET ether

Slide Content

PETROLEUM ETHER
•Petroleum ether is one of the low boiling grade of special
boiling point solvent.
•Non polar in nature
•Obtained from petroleum refineries as the portion of the
distillate which is intermediate between the lighter naphtha
and the heavier kerosene.
•Chemically, petroleum ether is not an ether; but mixture of
various volatile, highly flammable, liquid hydrocarbon
mixtures e.g., pentane, hexane and heptane. Contains no
aromatics; or low aromatic; Because of its lower cost, used
instead of pentane, hexane and heptane.

•As it is a mixture of saturated hydrocarbons (CnH2n+2)
taken as a fraction from the distillation of crude oil, it
does not have a fixed boiling point.
•The exact composition will vary depending on the boiling
range and on the source it was extracted from, but can be
expected to contain almost entirely alkanes, some straight
and some branched.

Physical properties

Main application sector
•Pharma sector
PET ether is mainly used in the pharma sector.
•As processing solvent in API production
•Product separation by chromatography
•Purification process of API

1.Oil extraction
PET ether is to extract oils from crops owing to its narrow distillation range
and selective power. PET ether as non polar in nature, used to extract
non polar oil and fat from food materials.
Yield of soya bean oil extraction for biodiesel and other
industrial use: - Comparative study
Quality Fine Medium Coarse
PET ether 95.4% 69.1% 55.6%
IPA 33.0% 32.0% 18.3%
As it is comparatively cheaper and also with higher yield, soya bean oil for
biodiesel and other industrial application can use PET ether for
extraction.

Comparative properties of extracting
solvents

Criteria for selecting extracting solvent
•Should be insoluble or slightly soluble with the solvent of
the solution being extracted
•Favourable distribution coefficient for the substance
being extracted
•Solvent should be easily removal from the extraction
substance and hence should have lower boiling point
•Chemical inert to extraction substance and other
components
•Should be reasonably safe and relatively cheaper

2.Fabric cleaning using petroleum ether
The organic solvents helps in removal of oily soil in the
presence of detergents. The particulate soil is largely
removed by providing agitation.
Agitation of garments in the cleaning medium is essential to
accelerate the removal of soluble soil or insoluble,
particulate soil.
Recommended organic solvents for fabric cleaning
1: 4 volume mixture of Petroleum ether & water
1: 1 volume mixture of perchloroethylene & water
Petroleum ether can be replaced by cyclohexane

3.Detergent
Magnesium borate based detergent using hydrocarbon solvent
The dilution solvent used in the process include Petroleum
ether, benzene, xylene, mineral spirit, gasoline etc
As solvent for fatty acid
PET ether is used to dissolve the fatty acid used in the process
of detergent .

4.Chromatography solvent
PET ether can be used as chromatography solvent for least
polar ingredients to be separated. Chromatography for
separation of (phytochemical, beta carotene, steroids)
•Petroleum ether Least polar
•Ligroin (hexanes)
•t-butyl methyl ether
•Diethyl ether
•Dichloromethane
•Ethyl acetate
•Acetone
•2-propanol
•Ethanol
•Methanol
•Water
•Acetic acid Most polar

Other miscellaneous sectors
*Oil , fat and waxes extraction
*Detergent
* Cosmetics
* Flowing agent for cellular plastics
* Fast evaporating solvent for adhesive
* Extraction agent for lac wax
* Synthetic fibre / yarn manufacturing
*Fuel
*Paint and varnish
*Insecticide
