Taming Bias: Using Wicked Problem Solving to Make Better Decisions
and Align Teams
Cognitive bias profoundly shapes the ways we perceive, think, and make decisions. They are mental
shortcuts which have evolved through countless generations and provide dramatic benefits and
substantial drawbacks. Bias is active in all parts of life –personal, professional, and social. And they are
particularly insidious in Wicked Problems.
Taming bias is a vital skill in today's knowledge work. But it's hard and requires a process, self-awareness,
and a willingness to examine how we work as teams and individuals. If we don’t have tools to address bias,
we dramatically increase our vulnerability to risk. But if we learn the language of bias and apply the
principles of ‘plays’ in addressing them, we become more effective in our work.

INDUSTRY CHALLENGES

1960s 1990s 2000s 2019/20
PM Discipline
In 1960s Project
Management became a
discipline in aerospace,
construction and defense
industries. It was from
these industries that the
PMI seed was planted.
New Development
Approach
The 1990s saw the
introduction of new
development methods
mostly by software
development teams.
Some of these new
methods include; Scrum,
RAD, DSDM and
Extreme Programming
Agile Comes into
Focus
In the spring of 2000, a
group of 17 software
developers met in to
discuss how they could
speed up development
times in order bring new
software to market faster.
Coronavirus
pandemic
The Coronavirus
pandemic disrupted labor
markets globally and has
fundamentally changed
"the way we work".
Brief History

Findings on Construction
Construction, the biggest industry in the world (13% of GDP), is
not performing well: 1% annual growth for the past two decades.
$69.4 trillion in global infrastructure investment would
be needed through 2035.
Skilled-labor shortages have become a major issue and
retirements will drain talent. E.g.: 41% of the US construction
workforce is expected to retire by 2031.

Our Research
Surveyed 40,000+ PMPs in Construction
72%
of construction project management
professionals experience project
delaysalways or often.
70%
of construction project management
professionals experience scope
creep always or often.
73%
of projects end over budget.
For every $1billion spent on construction projects,is wasted.

29 MARCH 2023 31
Construction projects struggle as a result of
poor design, which leads to poor execution
The construction industry lags other
industries in terms of innovation and
technologyadoption.
Often projects are setup with metrics that
drive the wrong behaviours and performance
measurement most times doesn’t have a
standardized process
Changes in project requirements,
creates downstream rework and
waste. This also leads to scope creep
Ineffective communication often leads
to confusion, frustration and distrust
amongst key stakeholders.
During the contracting and tendering
process, contractors will underbid
competitors in order to secure the
contract.
The complex nature of managing large
scale projects with the associated multi
disciplinary element, results in inherent
overlap of scope or scope being
missed.

progressively elaborate them
as they get closer to
execution. It also, promotes
the collation and use of data
in decision-making.
At the core of this new
certification is to propel
construction professionals to
