Historie Milan Milan was founded by the Celts of northern Italy under the name Medhelan around 400 BC,4 and was later conquered by the Romans in 222 BC, who called it Mediolanum. One of the most widespread etymological explanations considers that these names mean "middle land", either because the city is located between the Alps and the Apennines,5 or because it is located in the center of the Lombardy plain, between two important rivers: Ticino and Adda.6 Since the Roman period, Milan's economic development was favored by the city's location, a crossroads between the main communication arteries of the Po area. In 292 AD4 it became the capital of the Roman Empire, and later, after its division, of the Western Roman Empire between 395 and 402 AD.7 In 450 the city was sacked by the Huns.

C ontinuation of Milan's story Milan is an important commercial and industrial centre on an international level, as well as being the economic district and financial capital of Italy for tertiary services, finance, fashion, publishing and industry.
