Prokaryotes vs Eukaryotes

Cells!
/All living things are made up of cells.
/Cells are the basic unit of structure
and function for living organisms.
/Cells are the smallest part of a
living thing that is still considered
living.

/Some living things are made up of a lot of
cells (multicellular), while others are only
made of one cell (unicellular).
/Cells are composed of parts that each
perform a different and important
function.
/Can you think of anything else that is
composed of parts that each perform a
different function?

Types of Cells
/We have already discussed
the two major types of cells:
/Prokaryotes
/Eukaryotes
/Today we are going to talk
about them in more detail.

Prokaryote

Prokaryotes
/Prokaryotes have NO nucleus or
membrane bound organelles.
/They are simple and small.
/Prokaryotes are surrounded by a cell
membrane and a cell wall.
/Prokaryotes have circular DNA, but it is
not inside a nucleus.
/Prokaryotes have a flagella for
movement.
/All bacteria are Prokaryotes.

Eukaryote

Eukaryotes
/Eukaryotes have a nucleus and lots of
membrane bound organelles.
/Each organelle has a specific job.
/Eukaryotes are much more complex and larger
than prokaryotes.
/ All Eukaryotes are surrounded by a cell
membrane. Plant cells also have a cell wall.
/ Eukaryotes have DNA that is housed inside a
nucleus (central control center).
/Plants and animals are Eukaryotes.

What do Prokaryotes and
Eukaryotes have in common?
