PROPERTIES OF MULTIPLICATION

We can use the properties of multiplication to multiply numbers mentally.

What are the properties of multiplication?

Order Property Identity Property Zero Property

ORDER PROPERTY

Order Property - also called the Commutative Property.

Order Property This property says that you can swap the order of the numbers and still get the same product when you multiply. a x b = b x a

Order Property Examples: 2 × 4 = 8 4 × 2 = 8

IDENTITY PROPERTY

Identity Property This property tells us that any number that is multiplied by one, the product is that number. a x 1 = a

Order Property Examples: When multiplying: 2 × 4 = 8 4 × 2 = 8

Zero Property - This property tells us that when multiplying any number by zero, the product is always zero a × 0 = 0 0 × a = 0

4 x 0 = 0 1 000 x 0 = 0

What are the properties of multiplication?

Order or Commutative Property Identity Property Zero Property

We can use the properties of multiplication to multiply numbers mentally.

Knowing the basic multiplication facts is also important in mental multiplication.
