RECAP OF CANTILEVER BEAM

Cantilever beam

Cantilever beam

Cantilever

Cantilever beam SFD & BMD

Cantilever beam A beam can be completely analyzed by using the three static equilibrium equations ( ∑V = 0; ∑H = 0; ∑M = 0) NOTE: Analyzed : To findout shear force, moment , slope and deflection

Mechanics of solids – INTRODUCTION Introduction Materials are generally elastic in nature. When a body is subjected to an external load it is deformed. If the materials offers full resistance to the external force the process of deformation stops. But if the body is unable to offer full resistance, the deformation continues until failure takes place. The deformation is called strain and the accompanying resistance to deformation is called stress. I 1.1 Introduction to stress and strain

Force

1. Force Force is defined as an action in the form of push or pull exerted by one body on another body. Force changes or tends to change the state of rest or of uniform motion of a body in the direction of its action The unit of force is Newton(N)

2. Moment of Force When a force is applied to a body, it has the tendency to turn the body about some point. The turning tendency of a force about a point is called the moment of the force about that point. The moment of a force about an axis throught a point or the moment of a force about a point is equal to the product of the force and perpendicular distance of the point from the line of the action of force. Moment about point O, Mo = F x d O F d

3 . Actions and Reactions When a body is subjected to an external force it is called action The internal resistance offered by the body to resist the deformation caused by the external force is called reaction. Example: When the bat hits the ball - action When the ball hits the bat - reaction

4. Statics Statics is the study of the effect of force system acting on the particle or rigid body which is at rest. Rigid body : a body that does not deform or change shape

5 . Static equilibrium of bodies A body is in equilibrium if every point of the body has the same velocity. If the velocity and acceleration of every point on the body are zero, the body is said to be in state equilibrium.

6. Mechanics Mechanics is the branch of physical science which deals with the state of rest or motion of bodies that are subjected to the action of forces

7. Conditions of Static equilibrium A body is in equilibrium, that is, the body does not accelerate (capacity to gain speed), if the vector sum of all the forces acting on its is zero. 2. A body is equilibrium cannot have the tendency to start rotating about any point So the sum of external moments mush be zero about any point
