Science 6 Week 8

Day 1

Protection and Conservation of Ecosystem

Directions: Identify the type of interactions described. Choose your answer from the box and write it on the space provided before the number.

_________________1. A type of interaction when two organisms of different species “work together” each benefitting from the relationship. _________________2. An interaction wherein one animal consumes another. _________________3. A relationship where one organism is benefited while the other one is harmed.

_________________4. A type of interaction where organisms cooperate with each other for their survival. _________________5. An interaction that occurs between two species in which one organism benefits while the other organism is neither benefited nor harmed.

The Ecosystem is an environment where both living and non-living things exist and interact with one another. Identify what type of ecosystem is in the pictures.

Forest, coral reefs, and mangrove swamp ecosystems need to be protected and conserved. We need to give importance to these ecosystems because they provide us our needs. Let’s learn how to protect and conserve our ecosystems

The Ecosystem is an environment where both living and non-living things exist and interact with one another. Example of ecosystem is the tropical rainforests, coral reefs, and mangrove swamps. A tropical rainforest is simply an area where tall, mostly evergreen trees grow and with high amount of rainfall. Coral reefs serve as habitat for many animals. They are a breeding ground of marine life.

It is composed of non-living components such as water and sand and living components such as fish, crustaceans, mollusks, cnidarians, sponges and echinoderms. Mangrove swamp ecosystem is composed mostly of mangrove plants and animals like crustaceans and migratory birds. It is an important system that allows for the breeding of fishes and survival of other marine animals. It is also a part of the coastal and marine ecosystems.

Today, tropical rain forests, coral reefs and mangrove swamps are disappearing from the face of the globe. Despite growing international concern, these are continuing to be destroyed. These destructions have a global impact through species extinction, the loss of important ecosystem services and resources. However, these destructions can be slowed, stopped and in some cases even reversed. We need to protect and conserve the Earth’s resources. We need to give high value to our tropical rain forests, coral reefs and mangrove swamps.

Here are some ways to protect and conserve it. 1. Habitat restoration 2. Reforestation or replanting a forest 3. Mangrove rehabilitation. 4. Wildlife conservation which include protecting a sanctuary where animals live .

5. Supporting projects of the government and non-government organization that protect tropical rainforest, coral reefs and mangrove swamps. 6. Joining organizations that conduct educational campaigns and give information on how to protect and conserve it. Being responsible to the development and restoration of Earth’s resources like the tropical rain forests, mangrove swamps and coral reefs are key for the long-term benefits to mankind.

Day 2

Protection and Conservation of Ecosystem

Why do we need to protect our ecosystems?

Directions: Which of the pictures show how to protect and conserve the tropical rainforests, mangrove swamps and coral reefs.

Let us know more about these three ecosystems, its importance and the ways to protect and conserve it.

Protection and Conservation Tropical rainforests, coral reefs, and mangrove swamps serve as nurseries, breeding places and habitat of economically important plants and animals. They provide resources and needs for people. As the human population increases, the demand for the use of these resources increases, thus upsetting the ecological balance. People should practice different strategies in protecting and conserving these ecosystems.

Strategies to conserve the balance of life in the ecosystem include conserving the needs of living things, protecting the forest and wildlife ecosystems, wildlife conservation and habitat restoration. There are many ways that we can conserve Earth’s resources namely: reduce water and air pollution, practice proper disposal and bury of biodegradable materials. Biodegradable materials will be converted into useful substances that are good for plants.

Soil Conservation Soil conservation helps restore essential nitrogen in the soil through agricultural management methods like strip-cropping, which alternates strips of crop and uncultivated land to minimize erosion and water runoff, and contour farming, which is the planting of crops along the contours of sloping lands to minimize erosion and runoffs. Terracing also reduces erosion and runoff on slopes.

Water Conservation Fresh water is used for drinking, cooking and bathing. However, this fresh water is not readily available in all places. Water in the streams is now polluted and increased demand of water in the cities is evident. Water conservation is needed. Water supply in the reservoir could be increased through an effective watershed management. Restoring the vegetation in the forests or watersheds could increase the storage of the filtering capacity of watersheds. Wise use of water is also important for water conservation.

Habitat Restoration People cut down trees for several purposes. When trees are cut down, forest animals lose their homes. Protecting the forests is also a way of protecting our wildlife. Building a man-made fish sanctuary will restore the marine ecosystem and the wildlife in it. Reforestation or replanting a forest will help restore the forest ecosystem and the wildlife in it.

Mangrove Rehabilitation Mangroves should be protected and conserved. Cancellation of existing fishpond lease agreement on abandoned fishponds and obtaining the rights for coastal communities to manage the resources, establishment of greenbelt sites for mangroves by planting mangrove seedlings in the mangrove swamps and establishment of eco-tourism sites to generate income for the community and help restore mangrove forests are some ways of rehabilitating mangroves.

Wildlife Conservation Wildlife conservation, preservation and management mean keeping a record of the number and variety of different organisms and ecosystems in a certain area.

Here are some ways of protecting and conserving wildlife: ∙ Protect a sanctuary. A sanctuary is a place declared by the government as a protected area such as Tubbataha Reefs and El Nido Marine Reserve, Palawan. ∙ Support projects of the government in protecting wildlife such as The Philippine Tarsier Conservation Project (Bohol) and The Tamaraw Conservation Project ( San Jose Occidental Mindoro).

∙ Visit captive breeding areas such as zoo or in specialized animal clinics. Captive breeding saves endangered species. ∙ Do not buy products made from animal parts. ∙ Join organizations that conduct educational campaigns and give information on how to protect and conserve the wildlife ecosystems. ∙ Help raise funds to support projects for wildlife conservation.

Yes or No Directions: Read the sentences below carefully. Write YES if it tells the importance of tropical rainforests, coral reefs and mangrove swamps, and NO if it DOES NOT. _________1. People get livelihood from mangroves. _________2. Coral reefs protect and shelter the young fish. _________3. Forests help in the increase of global temperature.

Day 3

Protection and Conservation of Ecosystem

What are some ways of protecting and conserving wildlife?

Let’s read the following questions. ∙ What are the physical conditions of tropical rainforest, coral reefs and mangrove swamps? ∙ Why do we need to protect and conserve them? ∙ How can we protect them? We will answer this questions as we go through our lesson.

Continue lesson on protecting and conserving our ecosystems.

TROPICAL RAIN FOREST Rainforests are often called the lungs of the planet for their role in absorbing carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, and increasing local humidity. Rainforests also stabilize climate, house incredible amounts of plants and wildlife, and produce nourishing rainfall all around the planet. They make much of the oxygen humans and animals depend on. Without them, there would be less air to breathe! Rainforests also help maintain Earth's climate.

By taking in carbon dioxide, they help to reduce the greenhouse effect. They help stabilize the world’s climate; provide a home to many plants and animals; maintain the water cycle protect against flood, drought, and erosion; are a source for medicines and foods; support tribal people; and are an interesting place to visit. We need the rain forests to produce oxygen and clean the atmosphere to help us breathe. We also know that the earth's climate can be affected, as well as the water cycle. Rainforests also provide us with many valuable medicinal plants, and may be a source of a cure from some deadly diseases

CORAL REEFS Coral ecosystems are a source of food for millions; protect coastlines from storms and erosion; provide habitat, spawning and nursery grounds for economically important fish species; provide jobs and income to local economies from fishing, recreation, and tourism; are a source of new medicines, There are w ays to protect the reefs such as discouraging people from collecting coral for ornamental purposes, illegal dynamite fishing, dumping of garbage into the sea.

MANGROVE SWAMPS Mangroves are the first line of defense for coastal communities. They stabilize shorelines by slowing erosion and provide natural barriers protecting coastal communities from increased storm surge, flooding, and hurricane. Mangrove forests are home to a large variety of fish, crab, shrimp, and mollusk species. These fisheries form an essential source of food for thousands of coastal communities around the world. This helps stabilizes the coastline and prevents erosion from waves and storms.

Mangroves , seagrass beds, and coral reefs work as a single system that keeps coastal zones healthy. Mangroves provide essential habitat for thousands of species. It would be hard to do without mangroves. Creating land ideal for coastal development, these trees die from subsequent population stresses. Their abundance of sea creatures leads to overfishing. without mangroves, “red tide” algae blooms in the water, kills sea life, and shuts down beaches.

Questions: 1. What are the different types of rainforest? 2. How can we protect the rainforest, coral reefs and the mangroves? 3. What are the ways of conserving them? 4. Why do we need to protect them? 5. How can we help in our own little way to protect and conserve them?

True or False .Write TRUE if the statement is correct and FALSE if it is incorrect. Write your answers on a separate sheet. _______1. Corals are living organisms. _______2. Ecosystem can be destroyed by human activities. _______3. Mangroves, coral reefs, and rainforest are examples of ecosystem.

_______4. Destroying the ecosystem can harm humans and other forms of organism _______5. If there are no mangroves forest, then the sea will have no meaning.

Complete the sentences. Write your answer in your notebook. 1.Coral reefs are endangered by __________? a. Climate change c. pollution b. overfishing d. all of the above 2. A coral reefs provides _____for a small fish. a. food and shelter c. sewage b. friends d. all of the above

Day 4

Protection and Conservation of Ecosystem

How does the condition of our ecosystem affects human?

Compare the two pictures.

Let us learn about the importance of mangroves in the ecosystem and how to protect them.

Mangroves are incredibly important to coastal ecosystems and the ocean at large. Specifically, they operate conjunctly with coral reefs and seagrass beds in tropical environments. If one is negatively impacted, the rest are too. Show video on why are mangroves important. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ihUI63jodR0

Discuss the concept of the video. What will happen to the animals living in the mangrove swamp if its dirty and polluted? What is the effect to us human? Who will be affected most?

Draw a clean mangrove swamp. Answer the following questions. 1. Give reasons on why we need to protect this ecosystem? 2.What will you do in your own way to help protect and conserve our mangrove swamps?

Make a poster showing how to protect and conserve the tropical rainforests, coral reefs and mangrove swamps.

What are some ways on how to protect and conserve mangrove swamps?

Evaluation will be shown on the video.

Day 5

Protection and Conservation of Ecosystem

Why are mangroves important? What are some ways on how to protect mangrove swamps?

Do you love going to beach? Do you apply sunscreen? Did you know that there are certain sunscreen that can harm our coral reefs?

What can you say about the picture? Describe the ecosystem shown.

Let us learn more ways on how to protect and conserve our coral reefs.

Coral reefs benefit almost 500 million people and provide habitat for 25% of all marine species, but they’re also the most threatened. Want to help? Here are some simple, effective actions you can take to help save coral reefs and the fish, animals and plants that depend on them.

Divers step off the boat into the water. 1. Dive responsibly when you visit coral reefs Avoid touching reefs or anchoring your boat on the reef. Contact with the reef will damage the delicate coral animals, and anchoring on the reef can kill corals. How tourism can be good for coral reefs.

2. Wear a reef-friendly sunscreen Several common sunscreen ingredients, including oxybenzone and octinoxate, have been shown to be toxic to coral reefs. Sunscreens that use non-nano zinc oxide as their active ingredients do not contribute to coral bleaching.

3. Eat sustainable seafood Research where your seafood comes from and if it's caught sustainably. Parrotfish eat algae off coral reefs, cleaning the reefs and helping the corals stay healthy and thriving.

Parrotfish play an increasingly important role in tropical reef ecosystems that suffer the depletion in reduction of coral cover. Parrotfish  maintain coral reefs by consuming and removing macroalgae , which otherwise would cover the reef, causing it to become unhealthy and hindering it from growth.

4. Make your lawncare green You may live thousands of miles from a coral reef, but the products you put on your lawn will eventually flow into the water system. Use green alternatives for fertilizer and pesticides that won’t harm coral reefs and marine life.

5. Volunteer! If you live near the coast, volunteer in local beach or reef cleanups. If you don’t live near the coast, get involved in protecting your local watershed. Find an opportunity near you.

6. Leave no trace Don't leave unwanted fishing lines or nets in the water or on the beach. Any kind of litter pollutes the water and can harm the reef and fish.

7. Conserve water Use only the water you need. The less water you use, especially outdoors, the less runoff and wastewater will pollute our oceans.

8. Spread the word! Educate your family and friends about coral reefs and contact your local representatives to see what your state is doing to protect coral reefs.

Give at least five ways in protecting and conserving our coral reefs

Can you save the coral reefs? Check (/) your answers. ___1. Use chemical for fishing. ___2. Keep waterways clean. ___3. Protect young fishes. ___4. Report dumping garbage. ___5. Use corals as decors or jewels.

Develop an advertising campaign aimed at encouraging sustainable conservation of coral reefs.

In your own ways, how can you help protecting and conserving our coral reefs?

Choose the letter of the correct answer. 1.How can we help protect our coral reefs? a.Collect corals b.Clean coral reefs c.Prevent dynamite fishing d.Throw oil into waterways

2.How can we save coral reefs? a.Use chemicals for fishing b.Throw garbage into rivers c.Use chemicals for fishing d.Prevent water pollution

3.Mang Ingo used muro –ami in fishing. What will you do? a.I will ignore it b.I will encourage him to continue the practice c.I will inform the government about it d.I will join him

4.Mining companies are required to put up silt deposition. Why? a.to produce more coral reefs b.to protect the habitat of the fishes c.to destroy the coral reefs d.to pollute the bodies of water

5.Quarrying in coral reefs should be stopped because- a.It will destroy the habitat of fishes b.It will increase the number of marine life c.It will produce more coral reefs d.It will make the coral reefs clean

6.The following are ways in protecting and conserving our coral reefs except a.Use of chemicals in farming should be avoided b.Do not dump sewage and garbage in waterways c.The government should stop muro-ami fishing d.Use of sodium cyanide and other poisoning substances in fishing

Make a paragraph on how to protect and conserve coral reefs.
