Introduction to Psychiatric Nursing A psychiatric nursing unit is a specialized area within a hospital or mental health facility designed to care for patients experiencing mental health disorders The focus is on providing a safe environment where patients can receive treatment, support, and rehabilitation.
COMPONENTS The ability to accept self. The capacity to feel right towards others. The ability to fulfil lifes tasks.
FUNCTIONS The basic functions of a psychiatric unit are to provide: Diagnostic and treatment services. Full or partial hospitalization. Education for staff, paitents and members of the public. Consultation for physicians.
DESIGN The unit should be designed as an open type ward with a non - institutional atmosphere for ambulatory patients requiring minimum security. The design should be avoid the typical general hospital look. There should be a single exit, tamper - proof fittings precautions against sucide and escape, and 24 - hour security. The psychaitric nursing unit should have 20 to 30 beds.
FACILITIES Facilities in the psychairic unit are by and large similar to those any general nursing unit except for the following special features and requirements. Windows should be operable by keys or some such devices that are under the control of staff Drug cabinet/storage should have provision for security against unauthorized access. Patients should not have access to their medical records.
STAFF IN PSYCHIATRIC NURSING UNIT The staff in a psychiatric nursing unit typically includes: Psychiatrists: Medical doctors specializing in mental health, responsible for diagnosis and treatment plans. Psychiatric Nurses: Nurses trained in mental health care, providing direct patient care, medication management, and therapy support. Psychologists: Professionals who provide therapy and psychological assessments.
Mental Health Technicians : Provide support with daily activities and monitor patients’ behavior and safety. Occupational Therapists : Help patients develop skills for daily living and work. Case Managers : Coordinate care and resources for patients throughout their treatment journey.
LOCATION The location of a psychiatric nursing unit typically varies depending on the healthcare facility. These units can be found in: General Hospitals : Many have dedicated psychiatric units within their structure. Specialized Mental Health Facilities : Standalone hospitals or clinics focused on mental health care. Community Health Centers : Offering outpatient services and sometimes inpatient care for acute cases. Residential Treatment Centers : Providing long- term care and support in a home- like environment.
SECURITY This unit combines psychiatric care with heightened security measures to ensure safety. Key aspects include : Safety Protocols : Enhanced monitoring and controlled access to prevent escape or harm. Therapeutic Environment : Focus on rehabilitation through therapy, medication management, and support. Interdisciplinary Team : Collaboration among psychiatrists, nurses, social workers, and security personnel. Patient Rights and Ethics : Balancing security needs with respect for patients' rights and dignity. These units aim to provide effective treatment while ensuring the safety of patients and staff.
