What is a PHC ? Primary Health Centre ( PHC s), sometimes referred to as public health centres , are state-owned rural health care facilities in India . They are essentially single-physician clinics usually with facilities for minor surgeries, too. They are part of the government-funded public health system in India and are the most basic units of this system. Presently there are 23,109 PHCs in India
PHCs form a basic part of the health care system. The Medical Officer appointed to run the PHC must be a MBBS degree holder.
Functions of PHC Provision of medical care Maternal-child health including family planning Safe water supply and basic sanitation Prevention and control of locally endemic diseases Collection and reporting of vital statistics Education about health National health programmes , as relevant Referral services Training of health guides, health workers, local dais and health assistants Basic laboratory workers

Types of PHC There are 2 types of PHC’s.They are:- Type A PHC: PHC with delivery load of less than 20 deliveries in a month, Type B PHC: PHC with delivery load of 20 or more deliveries in a month

Minor ot a.This should be located close to the OPD to cater to patients for minor surgeries and emergencies after OPD hours. Area:- 4000x4500 sq.mm
toilets a.Toilets should be well and cleanly mentained . Area:- 5750x4600 sq.mm
stores a.There must be available of all types of medicines thoses are advised by respective doctors. Area:- 1800x2100 sq.mm
Operation theatre a.Used for operations purpose. b.Near this room all usefull things should be available easily Area:- 5800x4600 sq.mm
Staff room a.Dressing room is attached to this room b.Used by staff for relax Area:- 3100x3500 sq.mm
Labour room a.Clear floor area shall be provided in the room y for newborn corner. I b. The Labour room shall be provided with a y good source of light, preferably shadow-less. Area:- 3500x4000 sq.mm

Area and location It should be centrally located in an easily accessible area. t should be well planned with the entire necessary infrastructure. It should be well lit and ventilated with as much use of natural light and ventilation as possible.
